@Romy_Holland About 2/3 of all American workers are covered by a self-insured plan. If you have knowledgeable people on your benefits team and company leadership that really cares about healthcare spending, it's a much better deal.

@Willob Been thinking about writing a long essay about exactly this. My working title was "Are we ready to talk about it now?" Glad to see I'm far from the only one.

The impact c*vid had on the world is still so underrated We all stopped talking about it because it was so distressing. We wanted to move on The truth is that it changed everything and it materially impacted a group of young people in ways that we can’t even fully appreciate yet So many trends are downstream of this: looksmaxxing, collapse in institutional trust, young men becoming more RW, trad wives, a return to faith, youth mental health

If @tbpn was sports center/pat mcafee for tech, how many existing formats are sitting right under our noses begging to be remade for tech/culture/startups?!?

Just finished re-reading Brave New World and boy I'd imagine Huxley would have some thoughts on our current state of affairs if he were around today.

Defense is like Hollywood or biotech: do a ton of work up front, pour millions of dollars into it, and hope your product proliferates as a "worldwide hit." Steve's theory of the defense industry from the latest episode of the pod.
The Drone Ultimatum@DroneUltimatum

NEW POD: Defense isn’t SaaS. Jocelyn Kinsey (DFJ Growth) joins to discuss defense as a "hits-driven business" and what most VCs get wrong. We cover: - capital flooding into defense - drone warfare shifts - how winners actually emerge Available now on Spotify / YouTube / Apple Podcasts.

@conheadcapital An exception that proves the rule in my mind. But I hear you, it is nice to have the surprise factor too

@jackusherr Having a small separate account is great (just spending money), but it’s nice to buy a gift and have it come from “me” not from “us”.

Big fan of Nick and his blog. This is one area where I strongly disagree with the recommendation. You'll save so much mental and emotional energy by going all in on shared bank accounts and building on a foundation of trust and honesty.
Nick Maggiulli@dollarsanddata

There's a simple solution to this: -Joint bank account (all income goes in, all shared expenses come out) -Each spouse keeps separate account -Any surplus (in joint account) gets split (50/50) and sent to separate accounts -For big purchases, each party deposits back into joint

Looking back on it, It is shocking how low the bar is to impress people when you're in a new grad / entry level position. I'd show up on time + proactively do one small thing and senior people would act like I just saved the company.

@jackusherr I agree. If you are always planning contingencies in marriages, it tends to become a self fulfilling thing. If you can't go all in, that's a signal that maybe you shouldn't be going into it at all.

I sympathize with the feeling - my main contention is that couples will have a better time and stronger relationship if they literally buy into "we are one, what's yours is mine, and our lives are shared." Also there are many accounts now that are sole-owner only (HSA, 401k, IRAs, etc.) and those could be accessed in a crisis situation. I'm all for everyone having their own in that category.

@jackusherr I agree in theory, but I have strong feelings that every person should have their separate accounts/assets. I believe this is even more true for women who, historically, didn't have the means to escape abusive relationships because no money was under their control.

The joint-bank account approach is an even clearer winner once kids come along.

Marriage is a serious thing. Two become one. It's the most significant decision people make in their lives. If you feel unwilling to completely open and join your life to someone else, including financially, don't get married to that person.
