AI is the dog that learned to walk on its hind legs.  And the dog does it well. But that isn’t what’s impressive. It’s that the dog can do it at all. I’m certainly amazed at what ChatGPT can do. It can churn out five perfect paragraphs in the time it takes me to adjust my chair height. It will complete an email reply before I’ve finished reading the original. But what I’ve gained in speed and effortlessness, I’ve lost in personality. My writing may be arguably “better”: more concise, clearer, more grammatically perfect. But something’s lacking. It makes me realize that I’m a collection of my imperfections. My writing may not be perfect, but it’s mine. As AI learns to anticipate my thoughts, mirror my writing style, even emulate my spelling and grammatical mistakes, it will certainly make my life easier. I just wonder whether something irretrievable will be lost. At the time, I never understood why my father was so heartbroken when music moved from vinyl to digital. “It just doesn’t feel the same,” he would explain to me as he cued up another LP. Only now, 40 years later, do I truly understand what he meant.
