@Valardohaer Some rules are stricter than the others. The rule about vegetarianism is not as strict as the one about intoxicants. Hence, pātaka, upapātaka and mahāpataka. One should always try to follow rules of śāstra yathāśakti.
Furthermore, alcohol also has laukika disadvantages.
English

Even so, brāhmāṇa-s are strictly forbidden from drinking alochol by dictates of śāstra. Expiation is very strict - death by pouring hot wine.
Even when using as offering, viprajana-s should refrain from consumption. Very few exceptions to this rule.

Bs, alcohol is one of the pancha-makara, which are mandatory offerings in vamachara tantra (practiced in Assam). No tantric ritual (in vamachara) dedicated to Kali and Bhairav can be undertaken without the offering of liquor.

Tamil grammar was codified based on Sanskrit's lost "Aindra" tradition
Arun 🌞@Arun_vish
Hit me with the craziest history about Tamil Nadu that you know
English

@Valardohaer Doesn't mean we stop following each and every rule.
gRhyasUtra-s also have similar injunctions against alcohol drinking.

@TupurSen @B97520Basty It could be but it doesn’t certainly refer to what we now know as Bengal. Konkani Brāhmaṇas according to different textual sources are from Mithilā.

@artha_rise genuine concern but just a tit for tat attitude, a reprocity for doing the same with our side. Most don't want to bother at all with others.
English

@artha_rise The general consensus among Hindutvavadi-s of all hues is that Muslims and Xians should stay away from Hindu scriptures, practices and theology and vice versa.
This constant bringing up of prophet's life stories, regressive muslim practices or mindset among Ms is often not some+
English

Hindutvas on even days: "these Muslims and Christians are against our Hindu Sanskriti"
Hindutvas on odd days:
Subham@Mysticsuvvy
@medullaoblon @Gurhi_jalebi Hope it fail ... No muslim should touch our shastras ...malechaaas

@kojAnAti The vamachara texts constitute that exception, as do rites like the Sautramani. It's one thing that certain v1 traditions may not be comfortable consuming it, but it's well established as a specific injunction in Kaula texts that overrule the general prohibition
English

@kojAnAti @pathaspati अ-ब्रम्ह religions had lost heritage from पूर्वजs and had to make their शास्त्र diktat based as a result. Their belief that their forefathers were dumb and sinned could have arisen from loss of पूर्व अनुपूर्व शास्त्र.
This belief about ancestors is a fundamental difference.

@kojAnAti Yes, but the events are also real exactly as they are written.
English

@keyur1277 @pathaspati 2. Some statements in śāstra are extreme because śāstrakāra-s wanted people to dissuade from some acts more strongly than the others. Herein, alcohol drinking for Brahmins is considered very bad. Combine this with laukika ills of drinking alcohol and there is a strong case.
English

@keyur1277 @pathaspati There are two things:
1. Death by pouring wine is not a punishment. It is a method of atonement for mahāpātaka. There are other methods too but this is the most advisable. Any traditional scholar will confirm to this. The translator - gaṅgānātha jhā - was a mahāmahopādhyāya
English

@keyur1277 सोम isn't really an intoxicant from what I know. Only labelled as such. @pathaspati if you can back me up on this
English

@kojAnAti मधु॑ वाता॑ ऋताय॒ते is to be read in this context:
Until it became abundant, Sugars (सोम) were main intoxicants for most of Homo history. Alcohol is distant second.
मनुस्मृति context is - सोम preferred; सूरा not.
Sugar is THE most potent psychedelic even today.
