@tomik99 @Jay_Edlin @OpenMercato @_wove He didn't call your work flimsy though, did he? Just the post. And it's not undeserved tbh. I'm keeping my fingers crossed hard for Open Mercato, but this particular opening post is more buzz than substance. And I write this *knowing for sure* Open Mercato IS substance.

@Jay_Edlin @OpenMercato @_wove I’m not sure that calling other people’s work “flimsy” is the strongest growth strategy. Anyway, respect for building in logistics. Wishing you continued success.

Still looking for a real example of complex, mission-critical enterprise software built with AI? Here you go. In 6 weeks, a working Freight Management System for air & ocean forwarders built on @OpenMercato . – Built in weeks, not years – ~7% of traditional cost – AI agents at the core – Zero license fees – Zero vendor lock-in This is what AI-assisted enterprise building looks like.

Lenovo has replaced the right control key on their otherwise-pretty-nice latest X1 Carbon (warranty replacement) with a copilot key. Fine. I won't begrudge some Microsoft PM "AI impact" in his self-review. But know what I do begrudge? The scancodes, plural. See, the copilot key is defined to emit not only a new scancode (0x6e), understood as F23 key (which archeologists believed wasn't a real key, but a legendary signifier of excess), but also left shift and left meta (Windows key). When you type the copilot key, the PC firmware sends the machine left-shift-down left-meta-down f23-down f23-up left-meta-up left-shift-up. That's a problem for remapping the copilot key back to right-control though. Even if we interpret 0x6e as right-control, we get a bunch of other modifiers we don't need along with, a press of copilot-r gets read as control-meta-shift-r, which is not what I want. Why did they do this? I have no idea. 0x6e by itself would have sufficed to identify the new key. All the other neokeys that seemed like good ideas at the time got normal scancodes. F23 would have been fine. The scancode 0x6e is so uncommon Linux had to be patched to recognize it. I'm determined to have a right control key, however, so now I run keyd to present a fake virtual keyboard to Wayland. Whenever it sees a left-shift-down or left-meta-down, it waits a few milliseconds to see whether an F23 has arrived. If it has, it synthesizes a right-control press. If it hasn't, it forwards the modifier presses. Now there's a whole new stage in the input processing pipeline, and extra input latency, that exists solely because AI is so special that it demands not only a new key, but for that ceremonial key to be carried on a litter of modifier bits as it parades into the OS and commands that inference happen now.

@ActualJC @dcolascione People who worship Thinkpad often also worship the Trackpoint, which you call useless and I use as my sole input device on a laptop. I, for example, would not buy a laptop without a Trackpoint now. So to each his own. 🤷‍♂️

I don’t get why people worship Thinkpad hardware. I have two from work at the moment and they’re …. not nice? The trackpad is too small, the clicky buttons for the stupid trackpoint get in the way, and even the famed keyboard is just not that nice. It’s a cliché, but my Macbook is a much nicer piece of kit.

Chuffed to be awarded the Peter Hampson Memorial prize for the D1 (Wine Production) @WSETglobal Diploma module performance in EMEA: a bursary to study a wine producing region. Good kick of motivation before upcoming D3 exams! 😀

Yep, another wine fair. Vinitaly starts with Opera Wine, an Insta photo-op disguised as a tasting. The famous stuff gone before half-time. Vajra great as always. My best drop was the amazing 2012 Soave from Prà. I met more interesting people than wines; it all felt a bit 1990s.

The @googlephotos family sharing workflow is utterly messed up. To use a photo wife took for anything I can't just tap Share, I first have to find it in a Forsaken Land of Endless Taps, and then explicitly save it to my own library. And then find it AGAIN in my own library. Wtf.

@GergelyOrosz Hey, I still do that! Okay, almost - I've had a desktop for years. It *is* a laptop now, but I need a really serious force majeure kinda need to take it home. It sits on the desk on the dock and that's where it belongs.

Later today will be sharing a deepdive about a tech startup building a complex system where everyone works from the office… using *desktops.* Meaning that work only happens in the office. And when people leave the office: they *cannot* take work home with them!

@madisommelier @wblakegray I don't disagree with the main assumption. However, kiosk/iPad experience throwing curveballs at you & staff being plain unfriendly isn't by any means equal to "catering to outdated experiences". Both could've been handled very clearly differently.

@maticomp @wblakegray It just comes across as a rather entitled attitude… hospitality is an industry that operates at different levels… expecting a food truck to cater to now outdated experiences just seems rather out of touch, and unaware of the modern world and it’s actual problems

Just stood in front of a food truck ordering window for 5 minutes. They would not speak to or acknowledge me. They have an iPad order system near it. I tried to get 2 burgers. The final screen had a 10-page privacy policy and suggested a 20% tip. I went to a different truck.
