Didn’t like England last night. Not enough pressure on the ball. Not enough possession. Not enough control. But they won. And that’s all that matters, I guess. But the main selling point behind England potentially winning the tournament was Tuchel’s tactical acumen. That hasn’t been optimal against Congo or Mexico. Quansah negatively impacted the dynamics with the ball. The press was too passive and it saw them lack control in the game. You have to be able to suffer and defend low for periods, sure, and England did that unbelievably well with 10 men, but teams should have to work harder to make England defend that low for that long (when they had 11 men). Otherwise England will be involved in basketball games. End-to-end. You attack, we attack. That’s suboptimal. That’s reactive, and not proactive. And also not brave, either. Arsenal lost the Champions League final because of this. They were not coached to defend low for the whole game, but that’s what they did. England must be braver with and without the ball. But they need Tuchel to give them the optimal conditions to go out and achieve that.

If and it’s a big if with the way we’re playing, beat Congo then I’m extremely worried. Mexico were stupidly good in the first 45 last night, the pace and energy on counter attacks, combined with all the other factors of playing there I fear would tear us apart 😭
