Wonderful to have played a small role in this effort. This century of biochemistry will place the staggering numeracy in the systems we study at the forefront of our science. Looking forward to more thinking like this👏 #Biochemistry #Redox #Bioenergetics

New publication from my lab about the metabolic (mitochondrial) effects of Yerba Mate (YM). We found disparate effects of YM in fat tissue and muscle tissue. In fat, YM increased metabolic rate (via greater mitochondrial uncoupling). However, in muscle, YM had no such effect--mitochondria were as efficient as ever. Overall, a uniquely beneficial series of changes that helps explain the general observations of YM facilitating weight loss and exercise performance. @dan_hues @Unicity mdpi.com/2072-6643/15/2…

Through Dr. David Hood's leadership @dhood_york, the Muscle Health Research Centre @MHRC_YorkU has made great impact to scientists + trainees in Ontario and beyond. Together, we are forming the next phase for the Centre that will see new initiatives + partnerships. Stay tuned!

Since the discovery of CRISPR-Cas systems, people have wondered if a similar type of system exists in eukaryotes. Today, we report in @Nature the characterization of Fanzor, a eukaryotic RNA-guided system that can be reprogrammed for human genome editing. nature.com/articles/s4158…

@lydfinley Thank you for this🔥thread! Do you think it would be fair(er) to say the Crabtree effect = inhibition by glycolysis, rather than by glucose? Experiments in which respiration is rescued by poisoning glycolysis (e.g., with iodoacetate) seem to support. #b0200" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

My❓: why is the Crabtree effect associated with yeast metabolism when Crabtree worked in mammalian cells? This review has the answer + historical perspective on the early studies teasing apart the relationship between oxygen, fermentation and respiration sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

“In conclusion, lactate is less effective than glucose and potentially detrimental during neural network rhythms featuring high energetic costs, likely through the lack of some obligatory ATP synthesis by aerobic glycolysis at excitatory and inhibitory synapses.”

@mitokanedria Good point. They performed a western blot on LDHA with no response from mito well and a lot from the cytosol well. Did not see anything on LDHB in paper. To be continued...

Anyone digested this paper re: FiLa? Technical (with cool images) yet relevant to discussions around lactate. "FiLa showed...not only that there was a lactate pool inside mito...but lacate level in mito signif higher than cytosol" Big news or whatevs? pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36309010/
