Something very strange going on here: bbc.co.uk/news/articles/… That vehicle is a BMW X5...which has *never* been available via the Motability Scheme. Care to explain @BBCNewsNI ?

*FACT CHECK* - Are Motability vehicles *FREE*? *No* - users typically pay an up-front fee (c. £500-£8000) to LEASE a vehicle for 3 years. They also forfeit their entire enhanced mobility PIP (£77.05 per week). Thus, a Motability car costs users ~£12k over 3 years (plus fee).

@harry__politics Our system uses a number of open datapoints to check and verify vehicle registrations. As stated on the website this is perfectly legal, indeed anyone can pay for an HPI check on any vehicle should they wish. We estimate the accuracy to be 99.9%.

@motabilitycheck Why do you claim to have a <2% FPR, when an entire category of false positives - privately registered cars with disabled owners claiming the relevant tax exemption - is not even accounted for? Why did you pluck "99.9%" out of thin air for your classifications too?

There's nothing illegal going on here at all - eligible PIP recipients can spend their payments how they wish. Indeed, the majority don't use the Motability scheme. But is a BMW i4 an appropriate, state-funded car to hand out? That's for you to judge.

Motability was setup to offer disabled people functional cars to give them independence and dignity, NOT high-performance luxury cars. With this car sucking up an EIGHT GRAND non-refundable deposit and 100% of someone's mobility allowance it's a frankly BIZARRE use of taxes.

Why does Motability allow PIP recipients to get a 286 bhp BMW i4 on their scheme? This is a £51,370 performance car in *BASE SPEC*.
