@philchadwick64 @CdrEricson @HiddenHistoryYT I went and saw her in dry dock at Pompey in 1999. Her hull was being sandblasted. I recall she had a distinctive off kilter dent right on the lowest part of her bow where she must have had a big bump.

HMS Belfast and Tower Bridge, London, 1971. This was Belfast's last voyage before she moored in the Pool of London. It was there converted to a static visitor attraction and is now operated by the Imperial War Museum.

@hw97karbine @FennellJW Until 02/12/74 when CO Hoddinot, signals Admiralty: "The reek of cordite has passed from the Royal Navy's submarine service. Last gun action conducted at 13:30 Zulu. Time to first round: 36 seconds. May the art of submarine gunnery rest in peace, but never be forgotten."

@Hantsprints Blackwood Class, 1 shaft/propeller. They would roll like a barrel of biscuits in rough seas. 27 knts top speed/about 5,200 miles on full tank. Spent Christmas duty on HMS RUSSELL in the 70’s. Officer of the Day had us picking up litter on the jetty to no doubt impress his wife.

@WarshipCam @defyseguridad I’ve seen ships in better condition on the way to the breakers! However that is a brilliant picture. You can just imagine the individual physical battle each crew-member is going through in those seas.

@CcibChris Saw EAGLE towed out of Pompey in 74? She was high in the water as she had been de stored. One of the powerful tugs was ROYSTERER. Yellow smoke bombs were let off in the funnel making it look like she was under power. I next saw her laid up in Guzz in 76. Poor old beauty.

Not Ark Royal! Generally thought to have been a better carrier, but in wrong place at wrong time for F4 upgrade.

@PaulTanton4 @Hantsprints I’m pretty sure the long pole by the SK tail rotor is a stowed flagstaff for when they raise the Union flag on the bow. I might be wrong as I was not a “deck ape” 😄

@dangerous155a @Hantsprints Agreed! I went on both BLAKE & TIGER alongside each other at Pompey Navy Days probably in 74 or 75? Both ships hot, and with that "warship smell", the machinery, the cables, the shin whacking stepping through bulkhead hatches and always the constant noise of the ventilation fans.

@Hantsprints beautiful ship, loved going on her at Navy Days as she still looked a ship from WWII, apart from her new helicopter deck.

@aviationarchive Tim, Excellent clip of the Arromanches! Regarding the wars in Vietnam.. I can strongly recommend 1} The Last Valley (by Martin Windrow) 2} Vietnam (by Max Hastings) and 3} A Bright Shining Lie (by Neil Sheehan) big big BIG books but worth it!

In 1946 the British loaned the French Navy an aircraft carrier, Arromanches, and a key aspect of its operations was the use of surplus U.S. Hellcats and Helldivers. This is HD colored footage of the ship in 1949, during the Indochina war (a precursor to the Vietnam War).🫡

@CcibChris Imagine looking at that great picture now frozen in time. Each of those beautiful ships, machinery screaming hot vibrations in the throbbing heat. The smell of the oil, the fuel and exhaust fumes mixed with the galley food smells...and the NOISE

Exercise SHOWPIECE in the South China Sea. This photo is taken from the flight deck of the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Eagle in the foreground. The three carriers astern of her are, from forward to rear, HMS Bulwark, HMAS Melbourne and HMS Victorious. credit I love Warships

Can't believe it's 16yrs ago that I took the boys to the Pier Head for a look around the RN carrier that was visiting. Can't remember if it was HMS Ark Royal or HMS Illustrious though ?

@Br1t2000 @CcibChris I was there too! Blinking HMAS MELBOURNE!! she steamed into Pompey a few days before the fleet moved out to Spithead. I was in a "painting the side party” on a floating pontoon alongside my ship. Her bow wash & wave had us dancing & tottering to save our pots of Pussers grey!

@Hantsprints The main passage way in RN ships is/was “The Burma Road”. In some County, or City named ships a Main Street name was sometimes apparently used. Does anyone remember what any of these County class ships used?

Remember when Keir Starmer wanted to pass emergency legislation to "deal with" people reluctant to take the experimental mRNA injections? "We have to deal with the anti-vax campaigns, because they will cost lives." "And if we need to pass emergency legislation to deal with them, I'll be quite prepared to work with the government on that... And the sooner we do that, frankly, the better."

@simonharley VICTORY was accidentally rammed when afloat in Portsmouth on 23/10/03. NEPTUNE was under tow when cables connecting her broke in a storm. Winds &strong tide pushed the ship back into the harbour itself. Then striking VICTORY on her Port side on the Orlop Deck with its bow ram.
