Hot take but almost every dude I know over the age of 30(myself included) says shit like this from time to time *in their private life* and it (usually) has nothing to do with actual negative feelings about gay people. In addition to an expletive, it’s used often in an affectionate manor towards a friend or someone you trust… it’s a word that was just common vocabulary for those of us growing up pre internet, that has now been policed into hibernation. Obviously this word can be used in a demeaning, homophobic way toward someone in an effort to belittle them for their sexuality(this I condemn), but most of the people I’ve known in my life that have or do use it casually, do not care at all about your sexuality. I expect some people, especially younger generations, will not understand this at all and will probably think I’m homophobic for even mentioning this…. but it’s just the truth of it. Now I expect everyone will come out in a frenzy trying to skewer Doug for being homophobic, when in reality, I’d wager he really has no ill will in his heart for gay people. His biggest mistake here is pretending like this never happens in private, because now he just sounds like a liar and there is nothing sadder than watching someone fold like a lawn chair at the first sign of mob pressure. Just my 2c
