The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons paved the way for the negotiation of the #CTBT. Today, both contribute to collective peace & security. Bringing CTBT into force would mark a decisive step towards the NPT’s ultimate goal of a world free of nuclear weapons.

Belgium welcomes the adoption by the @iaeaorg Board of Governors of a resolution confirming that 🇷🇺’s attacks on 🇺🇦’s energy infrastructure, incl. electrical substations, present a direct risk to nuclear safety and security, and reiterates support for the IAEA’s expert missions.

Today in Vienna, the @iaeaorg Board of Governors held an extraordinary meeting on nuclear safety risks caused by Russia’s systematic attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. @rafaelmgrossi clearly confirmed that such attacks fall within the IAEA mandate and pose direct nuclear risks. Russia will not escape responsibility. Ukraine will continue to build a systematic legal and political response, including initiating amendments to the IAEA Statute to restrict the rights of an aggressor state. Grateful to the Netherlands, Canada, Lithuania, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Romania, Portugal, France, the UK,and Japan for standing with Ukraine and making this meeting possible.
