Hungary lesson: Don’t debate Trump on policy. Name the corruption—and threat to democracy. Connect it to people’s lives. $3,800/household from tariffs. $2.5B gutted from the CDC. Billions in Trump family crypto profits while your grocery bill climbs and your kid’s school loses funding. Say it plainly. Repeatedly. Everywhere.

@atrupar @LaurenDownSouth Watch him claim at some point that this trivial “mean tweet” was the threat that got some form of concessions out of Iran. They disown Trump’s words before those who can hold him accountable and then turn on a dime and boast about the “tough talk” to Fox and the MAGA faithful.

Vance has now seized the top seat in the Death of Expertise Hall of Fame: He has lectured the pope—the pope, the leader of a billion and a half Catholics—about being too sloppy with theology. The queen of all vices: Pride. theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/04/…

The receipts are the argument. Douthat, on Obama's immigration enforcement priorities: "Caesarism... lawless, reckless, a leap into the antidemocratic dark." Douthat, on Orban's 16 years of court-packing, gerrymandering, media capture, majoritarian multipliers, and electoral rule-rewriting: if your party can lose a wave election, you're not in an authoritarian state. Beutler calls the bluff directly. If these rules are just fair democratic play, conservatives should be comfortable with Democrats applying them in mirror image: federal oversight of evangelical churches, criminal investigations of Heritage and Fox News, denaturalization proceedings against right-wing donor-operatives, denial of federal transfers to red states. Those actions would generate a Douthat column calling it tyranny within the week. That is the tell. Not what they say about Orban now. What they said about Obama then. And what they'd say about any of the above the morning it happened. The Pinochet point lands the logic. If losing an election proves you were never an authoritarian, Pinochet was not a dictator. The premise is false, and the people making it know it.
Brian Beutler@brianbeutler

1. The new MAGA line on Orban—“if your entrenched ruling party can lose everything in a wave election, you are not living in an authoritarian state”—is fallacious, and something they plainly don’t believe. Unless maybe they’re prepared to abide Trump-style abuses turned on them.

🚨BREAKING: The Trump administration is finally admitting the price tag of ICE and deportations… but not the cause. “It costs $18,225 per deportation.” Multiply that by millions… yeah, it is staggering. But, here’s what they aren’t saying… It’s expensive because they made it that way. They underfund the courts, fired a hundred+ of immigration judges… then complain the courts are “clogged.” They restrict legal pathways… then blame asylum seekers for using the only ones left. They drag cases out for years… then act shocked when attorneys are involved. And they’re locking people in detention facilities when they don’t need to be… adding thousands in costs per person… Because those facilities are run by private contractors… getting paid per bed, per day. So, the longer people are detained… the more money gets made, and the more it costs per deportation. But now, suddenly it’s the system’s fault? No… it’s the design. Break the system… bottleneck it… monetize the suffering… Then point to the price tag and say, “Look how broken this is.” They created the cost. Now they’re using it as an excuse to remove due process.

Douthat has spent 11 years publicly talking himself into a permission structure to vote for Trump, even though he knows better & despite J6. It’s depressing He clearly hasn’t spent much time in the democratic backsliding political science. He blithely dismisses 20 years of theory & data - including Trump & Orban cases - with one counter-datapoint (the recent Hungarian election) to protect what really matters: his cherished ideological prior that it’s morally acceptable to vote for Trump

@jaynordlinger @BillKristol Speaking of naive, Reagan called the Contras “freedom fighters.” Heritage Foundation sent fresh-faced interns to turn Iraq into a capitalist paradise with a stock market and Walmarts. Bush said he could trust Putin because he looked into his eyes and got a sense of his soul.

@saymaysmith @peterbakernyt NYT published an alarmist article intimating that Biden had seen a Parkinson’s specialist 8 times. Biden saw him once as part of an annual & for the rest of the visits the doctor was just there screening active duty WH personnel. NYT didn’t mind throwing around diagnoses then.

@dbrownnh @grantstern @duty2warn @BandyXLee1 They ran an alarmist story that Biden had 8 visits from a Parkinson’s specialist w/o even checking WH logs. The visits were actually routine neurology screenings for active duty WH staff. The doctor saw Biden once for a gen exam. This half-assed med speculation was fine for NYT.
