Utah's SB0082, the Autopsy Photo Amendments bill, was introduced into the legislature on January 9, 2025, and became effective on May 7, 2025.
Its drafting attorney, Greg Gunn, was the subject of unique Google Searches From israeli IP addresses: once in August 2024, a few months before the bill was introduced; and again in May 2025, the same week the new autopsy law went into effect.
The law criminalizes the knowing sharing, publication, or distribution of autopsy photographs that are part of a medical examiner's record, classifying it as a class B misdemeanor unless the photo is in the public domain. The legislation establishes strict rules for the release of medical examiner records, including
autopsy reports and photographs, limiting access to immediate relatives, legal representatives, physicians, law enforcement, and researchers under specific conditions.
