I've sort of resigned myself to the fact that FIFA will eventually expand to 64 teams in 16 groups, which would further reduce high-quality group-stage matches but does make the format a lot more symmetric, with the top 2 from each group strictly advancing.

Yeah, most of the matches have been pretty entertaining so far. And it's called the World Cup and it happens once every 4 years. I'd say the bigger issue is that 48 teams into 32 knockout slots is very generous.

The World Cup soccer announcer in the Turkey vs Australia game just said “you can’t win a game early but you can lose a game early.” How the hell does that make any sense? If you lose a game early, by default, that means that the other team won the game early. I have a very strong hatred for all of the stupid cliche phrases like this that get repeated non-stop and are just absolute, complete bullshit.
