@drantbradley There are plenty of opportunities for adolescents to be away from the watchful gaze of adults where inappropriate, bullying type behaviours can become more apparent. No? Is this an unfair opinion that I have that needs to be corrected?

@smcleanedu Yeah, so I still don’t understand the question. I’m not following the “Lord of the Flies” reference. I’m not following. An all-boys school has female and male teachers, staff, and administrators. The boys have parents, etc. I’m not following what you mean? What are you asking?

Dr. Michael Thompson identified the crisis of boys back in 2000. Parents, get your boys out of coed schools, if you can afford it. Coed schools are deigned & structured for girls! Yes, even classical schools. He’s right, “Boys see school as jail.” They need all-boys schools!

@drantbradley Ah, ok, apologies! In my choice of reference, The Lord of the Flies is about peer culture, not adult supervision. The concern isn’t whether male and female teachers are present but what happens inside childhood/adolescent social hierarchies when they’re exclusively single-sex.

@drantbradley Fair enough- I was asking out of curiosity rather than battling in a debate. I’d still be interested in hearing your response to the original question but I did not come to the table looking to score points or defend a position.

@smcleanedu I don't understand the question. What the evidence of single sex institutions have more degeneration than coed schools. What evidence are you referring to that single-sex schools with naturally degenerate in ways that coed schools don't? I'm not following your question.

@drantbradley Dr, I’m keen to learn more from your perspective rather than debate. How do we prevent singe sex institutions from degenerating?

Over a decade ago, @ProfCoe & other researchers at the Sutton Trust authored "What Makes Great Teaching?" Review of the underpinning research (2014). In this influential review, the authors identified several ‘poor proxies’ for learning; these are indicators that may lead observers to assume learning is taking place, but in actuality may not be related to learning. The idea of poor proxies can also be applied to feedback. Some well-intentioned feedback practices may look good to students, parents or observers, but they do little to actually improve learning. Lesson time is too precious to waste on practices that do not move learning forward! I explore this in the blog post below: evidencebased.education/resource/poor-…

Next time you’re talking with a colleague about retrieval practice and they say, “I already do this,” send them this article. The core of evidence-based practice isn’t just using the practice. It’s using it the way the evidence says it works.

Karen Horney has been my biggest influence in psychology. She explained why “nice guys” burn out, why some become tyrants, and why others vanish into isolation. All of it comes from the same root. A quick guide 🧵

@AlexKane221b My daughter was at the roadmap to 16 event in the commons yesterday there is a great passion for the ability to vote at 16 but equally she *yearns* for appropriate political education / conversation to be had in schools to prepare young people to be able to make informed choices.

I have wavered on this issue for years. My instincts are in favour, but I find it increasingly difficult to shake off concerns about the willingness of so many parties to lie without blinking and promise without costing. And let’s not even mention social media manipulation.
