@BedellEvan @CollegeBSBNews The Gauchos have always been an elite program. I just do not want to have to see them in regionals up in Corvallis. We need you in the top 16 so you can host!

@Fisherjw95 @CollegeBSBNews There is no question that the ACC and SEC have excellent baseball programs. On the other hand, so do UCSB and UCLA. Granted the Big Ten has bad baseball so UCLA is winning a lot, but they will have to play other Pac teams (UO & USC). The top teams have always been from the west.

@CollegeBSBNews UCLA won’t make it past regionals. They would be below .500 in ACC or SEC play.

@muellerberndt No computer simulation is correct because there are too many factors to fully simulate. They love doing climate simulations. The great thing is if you adjust the factors properly you can get the results you want.

@RileyJensen Thank you! My early years were all about competing as a long distance runner. Injuries took me out in college. It took a long time to find meaning and stop feeling like a failure. I learned to put the lessons I learned in sport to work in new adventures and success followed.

30 years ago I was the starting QB at Utah State University. My senior year I got benched. For the next 15 years I walked around feeling like a certified loser. Then I read this quote from Pat Summitt: 'Winning is fun… Sure. But winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never letting up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you’ve done is the point.' It snapped me out of it. If you’re still carrying a sports setback, a benching, a missed opportunity, or any “I’m not enough” story… this is your permission slip to drop it. The game isn’t over. Your story is not yet written. You are still a work in progress. The point is you keep wanting it. You keep getting up. And you listen to that quiet voice that says, "I will try again tomorrow."

@Clint_Davey1 Not to diminish the Scotts-Irish but there were also Irish. They were the first slaves before Africans were imported. There were also Western Irish after Cromwell purged their lands. My ancestors came from Galway in the 1600s. I think they blended with the Scotts-Irish.

This post is interesting because the USA is civic nationalist but very clearly has a "founding stock". In fact it has 4 main groups: Cavaliers - High Anglicans and their indentured servants from South and West England who settled in Virginia. Quakers: Pacifist and industrious folk from the Midlands who settled in Pennsylvania. Puritans: Radical Protestants from East Anglia who established their religious utopia in New England. Borderers: Tough frontier folk from the Scottish and Irish border regions who settled in Appalachia. This is according to David Hackett Fischer and his book "Albion's Seed". Without these people you don't really have America as we know it.
The English Remnant@Englishremnant

Most Americans who call themselves Irish aren’t talking about the same thing as the famine Irish of Boston and New York. A huge number are really Scots-Irish — English and Scottish border stock, Protestant frontier people whose ancestors came out of the borderlands, were planted in Ulster, then pushed into Appalachia, Tennessee, Kentucky and the South. Not Dublin. Not Cork. Not the tenements. A harder, older story of border clans, rifles, honour, feuds, distrust of authority and life on the edge of empire. The green beer version of Irish-American identity hides a lot. For millions, the real roots are English, Scottish, Ulster, frontier, Presbyterian, hill country and rebellion. Different people. Different history. Different temperament. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧

This system is called the “Canadian well.” The essence is very simple: at a depth of 2-3 meters, the earth always holds a stable temperature of about +10... +15°C. In the winter, the cold air from the street goes through an underground pipe and heats up before entering the house. ☀️ In the summer, the hot air is cooled down in the same pipe. That is, the earth functions as both a natural conditioner and a heater. It does not replace heating or air conditioning completely, but it greatly reduces costs and makes the air in the house more comfortable 👍

I stopped yelling at my kids for a week. Here’s what I noticed: we were late to school every single day they didn’t clean up a single thing they didn’t shower they didn’t do their homework they looked homeless I tried gentle parenting. They responded like tiny union workers on strike. Turns out my “yelling” was really just the family notification system.

@TechLayoffLover I can relate. I graduated with a degree in forestry just in time for President Carter to initiate 16% mortgage interest. The entire forest products industry shut down and I had to go back to school. Job markets are not static.

A new grad just got her CS degree last week with a 3.91 GPA from Georgia Tech and $247k in debt She's applied to 1,341 entry-level positions since February Zero callbacks. Not one. Her algorithms professor used to brag that 94% of their grads got offers within 3 months That was 2022. Before every single junior engineer role got replaced by a senior dev with Cursor She's watching her classmates pivot to bartending while entry-level postings now require "5+ years experience with AI-assisted development workflows" The career fair had 12 companies. All of them were hiring "AI prompt engineers" starting at senior level Her student loan payments kick in next month. $1,847 a month for the next 25 years Meanwhile the university just announced a $340 million AI research facility funded by the same tech companies that stopped hiring their graduates She calculated it out last night: she'd need to work at McDonald's for 8.3 years just to pay the interest Her mom keeps asking when she starts her "computer job" The brutal fucking irony: she spent four years learning to code just in time for coding to become obsolete She's 22 years old and her career is already over

@benlandautaylor One qualification. I think everybody would agree with the bankruptcy court idea as long as the school that allowed the debt to occur pays off the loans.

Student debt discourse is bananas. The core complaint is some people have loans they can't pay off. There’s a standard policy for exactly this issue that's worked super great for centuries. In my lifetime we stopped using it for this one specific loan for no good reason.
Ben Landau-Taylor@benlandautaylor

The absolute lowest-hanging fruit in domestic policy is just "make student loans dischargeable in bankruptcy again, like they were before 1998".

@stephenvbird @wil_da_beast630 There is no record of what indian or group of indians sold Manhattan. Indians very much had the concept of ownership and if you bought it from someone who didnt own it, you then had to fight for it or buy it again

This is the issue with "land back." What Native tribes sold for arms and the equivalent of a few hundred thousand was raw, un-serviced land - never been plowed, heavy tree cover, obviously no utilities. You can buy that sort of thing for $2k per acre in New York today...albeit upstate. There is no argument we owe some random group of Indians "Brooklyn."

@charliebilello Where is the graph for salary for the two groups? How many over 65 earn 150k? To put net worth into perspective - 400k @ 9% growth provides 36k income to add to a typical SS check of 2500/mth = 66k per year. Does not allow for inflation.

A 25-year old married couple earning $150k will pay over $3k more in federal income tax for 2025 than a 65-year old married couple with the same income (note: assumes no social security - 65-year old couple is waiting to age 70 to get max benefit). This is a fair tax policy?

American households age 65–74 have over 10x the net worth of those under 35. The "Big, Beautiful Bill" gave a $6,000 bonus standard deduction - exclusively for taxpayers 65 and older. Is that really where the help is most needed?

@theficouple You can do this mathematically or you can do it emotionally. I did it emotionally. I never have to worry about mortgage payments in the future, I can take a second for major purchases and it is not taxable, I can invest more money in the future because my cost of living is less.

Left handed people existing breaks a rule in evolution that nobody can explain Only about 10% of the population is left handed and that number has stayed the same for 10,000 years It never goes up and never goes down Evolution isn't meant to work like that, traits spread because they are useful or die off because they aren't Left handedness doesn't do either and stays the same percentage across every culture, country and population They process fear differently and react faster to danger than right handed people They are different neurologically and slightly overrepresented in certain criminal populations and significantly overrepresented among US presidents The trait seems to produce extremes Ancient cultures were afraid of them, the word "sinister" originates from the Latin word "sinistra" which means "left" or "on the left side" 10% There's always 10% Never more It was decided that was the exact number needed in the population

@SamaHoole In CA a large % of the land used to be grazing land primarily for sheep. Australia dumped lamb and undercut the local growers and now the land is fallow. You are right, grazing is low impact and provides nutrition from land that is not presently being used.

Can someone please explain, in very simple language, how growing almonds in a Californian desert, draining the local aquifer until the ground subsides, spraying the entire crop with fungicides because almonds can't survive without them, killing off the commercial bee population in the process, then refrigerating the harvest and shipping it six thousand miles to Britain is environmentally friendly, but buying a piece of beef from a farmer twelve miles down the road, whose cattle eat the grass that grows in the rain that falls on the hills that have been there since before anyone had opinions about this, is a planetary emergency? Asking for the cow.
