The fact that the future of the world economy is in the hands of someone who makes decisions simply based on his personal whims and the last person he talked to on the phone is truly preposterous. @upnorthlive The formula used by the administration to calculate tariffs made other nations’ tariffs appear four times larger than they actually are. President @realDonaldTrump is not an economist and therefore relies on his advisors to do these calculations so he can determine policy.

I’m not even a government official and I’ve had scores of representatives from other countries calling me to see if I can get them a meeting with the White House so they can negotiate either: 1. A reduction of trade imbalance, or 2. A mutual lowering of tariffs. Trump is brilliant.

The expectation now is we are heading into a recession. Possibly a severe one. And it’s because the President’s team doesn’t seem to know which end is up - nor the difference between a tariff and a trade deficit. At this point — It’s unclear the people around Trump (given that they are happily tariffing penguins) have the economic chops & mathematical skills to actually get anything done. The MAGA movement and .@realDonaldTrump will suffer bc too many of the so-called “economists” (or number crunchers and chart makers) on Trump’s staff aren’t terribly skilled. Where is @DOGE? I want to set the record straight on tariffs and my POV. Yes, I am currently a part of the laptop class. Yes, my retirement savings have been brutalized in recent days. Yes, I'm very near retirement age. Yet I have not lost sight of my working class roots. Further, like everyone else, pro and con, I do not know with certainty what the outcome will be of the Trump Tariffs. Unlike many, I am willing to give Donald Trump the benefit of the doubt and support his actions, until he proves my trust to be misplaced. He has yet to do that. Finally, I am entirely sympathetic to fixing the scourge of unbalanced globalism because it's the right thing to do, even if it causes me personal pain. I really wish more "conservatives" thought like me.

It's not nice & it's unfortunate these things have to happen. But the country is $35 trillion in debt & living way beyond its means. If something doesn't start happening about sorting this financial mess out then the pain we're seeing now will be nothing compared to the pain the whole country will eventually be made to suffer. Even the cuts the government is trying to make now & any money they do save, it's never going to be enough to make any kind of significant impact on the dreadful & frightening situation the country's gotten itself in. This country & its economy cannot grow its way out of the biggest threat to its existence that there's ever been.
