BREAKING: 🇮🇱 Israel used its laser air defense system against rockets launched from Lebanon. The “Laser Dome” (Or Eitan) laser system successfully intercepted rockets from Lebanon. A new era of defense.

@matthewjablack The only security call that I ever got that was done well was from AmEx. They called, said that there is a security issue and instead of trying to discuss on this call that I did not initiate that I should just call back the number on the card, at which point they spoke to me.

Just encountered one of the most convincing Google account takeover scams I’ve seen. Perfect American accent. Calm. Professional. They start the call by saying someone tried to hack your Google account using a fake death certificate, then ask if you recognize a recovery email or phone number. They ask if you’ve received any recent Google emails about an account you don’t recognize trying to recover access. And sure enough, there’s a legit Google security email. Here’s the trick. The attacker isn’t trying to hack your account. They create a throwaway Google account, set your email as the recovery email, then try to recover that account. Google sends you a real security email. The scammer calls you live, references the email, and even tells you to verify the headers since it comes directly from Google. The headers are real. That’s the point. Then they tell you they’re locking down your account and that you’ll get a recovery prompt on your phone. You just need to approve it to stay safe. The giveaway was the device and location in the prompt didn’t match me. When I pushed back, they claimed it was from their servers, which obviously makes no sense. At that point I hung up. I have a personal rule to never approve anything I didn’t initiate, especially while on the phone. Extremely well executed social engineering. I’m sure this works on a lot of people. And if someone calls you about account security, assume it’s a scam

@not_airspeed @optimistictory Invest and getting a 5% annual return on that million would get you the same yearly income and you still have a million left over even if you spend the $50k yearly.

Multiple restaurants in New York City have found a way around paying the minimum wage They are hiring virtual cashiers from the Philippines via zoom calls and only have to pay them $3.25 per hour The locations doing this still ask for 18% tips on orders Sansan Chicken, Sansan Ramen, and Yaso Kitchen locations in Manhattan, Queens, and Jersey City still prompt customers for 18% tips.

@MacNaughtonJosh @Rothmus Google compound interest and run a calculation. Save even $1000/month for 45 years at 5% annual return would give you over $2.5 million at the end

@Rothmus Im curious if by age 67 youve paid $600k and 5% of that is 30k. Where is $1.9 million are you assuming 5% per annum and that the 600k has been in there since the beginning? Im Canadian and someone explain to me.

@biwills @batwood011 @honey @MKBHD There’s Mr Rebates that does this, pays you cash back 1-10% depending on the site. They also have a browser extension that can redirect the affiliate cookie for you to activate the cash back, but they do it right when you go to the retailer, not in the cart or checkout.

@batwood011 @honey @MKBHD Did you ever explore (or know anyone who did) paying users of the extension a percentage of the commission for using the app? How much money would I save per year if I got 50% of all commissions for things I already buy?

My team built the leader competitor to @honey. This "scam" story is absolutely wild to me. In his video today, @MKBHD makes two claims about Honey's foul play: 1. Honey effectively steals commissions from their affiliate partners by being the last to drop their cookie when a user checks out. 2. Honey's value prop to retailers is dubious since they are giving customers discounts on products they were already about to buy. So, why is this wild? Because this is exactly how it has been since the beginning. 1/🧵

@RouaniJihad @markgurman This is a legit channel. He’s been doing tech stuff for a very long time. He does not produce fake stuff so it’s very real unless some Chinese supplier created a fake MacBook that runs real macOS and shows the M4 as the chip.

Unconfirmed but looks fairly legitimate: a Russian YouTube channel claims to have the yet to be announced M4 MacBook Pro and gave it a full unboxing and hands-on. We’ve seen prototypes leak early but never a full retail Apple device weeks in advance. youtu.be/V4E8716KFgw?si…

@TheN1James @menchaca1116 @Alphafox78 Yep, got pulled over with a BS excuse about not signaling a turn (even though I did) right after I bought my car because it had temp Illinois paper plates on them that their system could not validate. Wasted about 10 minutes with the cops, who validated that I actually bought it

Cops in many cities have cameras that read plates all day on their cars, it's tied to their computer. Any tag the computer finds that is owned by someone with expired registration or insurance or license and the computer beeps and tells the cop to pull you over. Ask they have to do is drive through traffic until their computer finds something on someone

Today was not a security or cyber incident. Our customers remain fully protected. We understand the gravity of the situation and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption. We are working with all impacted customers to ensure that systems are back up and they can deliver the services their customers are counting on. As noted earlier, the issue has been identified and a fix has been deployed. There was an issue with a Falcon content update for Windows Hosts. For the latest information that we will continuously update, please refer to the CrowdStrike website (crowdstrike.com/blog/statement…), my posts on LinkedIn, and my posts on X.  I will continue to provide updates to our community and the industry as they become available.

@AoDespair @musicophiliamix But the speed limit is 25mph. Everywhere in the city. Not just in the school zone. The problem is that the state would not let nyc put speed cameras anywhere except school zones.

@musicophiliamix Then make the speed limit 25 and we're cool. And charge speeding and I pay without comment. It's misuse of a school zone statute at a time when there is no operant school that's shit. That's just gaming. And a lot of NYers are criticizing the recent expansion of that to 24-7.

What sort of off-brand city sends me a $50 camera ticket for speeding in a school zone for racing at 36 mph in a 25 zone at -- wait for it -- 5:40 a.m. in total darkness on a morning in -- wait for it -- mid-July? Two-word clue: Yankees Suck.

In one street the two remaining synagogues of #Athens: one following the Sephardic rite, the other following the Romaniote one. This is one of three synagogues in the world still following this ancient liturgical tradition, continuing the legacy of hellenistic Judaism.

@SOCHLSA @ijustine UPS and fedex are private companies. They can’t just drop packages off at a post office. If it was shipped via the postal system, then it will be held in the post office if it was unable to be delivered.

@ijustine Here in Australia, either your package gets left at the door, if you authorised that, or it gets dropped off at your nearest post office. And a card is left at your door or in your letter box on where to collect it. Do you not have that in the US?
