Man, religion was really built on fear. I remember when I was in primary and secondary school, there was a conspiracy theory that was trending at the time, that people in the US and other Western countries had started receiving the mark of the beast “666,” and that the end time was around the corner. It’s been over 15 years since that fallacy, and the world hasn’t ended. I also remember a particular book by someone named Angelina or something like that, Prepare to Meet Your God. That book traumatized me in junior secondary school. In the book, she said she died and went to the afterlife, visited heaven and hell, and then came back to life on earth. She claimed that Ben 10, a goddamn cartoon, was in hell alongside Michael Jackson and other late celebrities, and that every time we sing Michael Jackson’s songs, he is being tormented by the devil. When I grew up and realized that all these were made-up lies and conspiracy theories, I began to decenter religion.
