@CitAdvNewcastle will have you waiting on their advice line for over 45 mins, then disconnect your call and forward you to the national number with a message stating advisers are not available. Care to explain this failure in your service?

@neilmcrowther Why do LAs currently use assessors (who are not regulated) rather than social workers? Because they’re cheaper? Or perhaps because there is no statutory body to regulate them meaning there is no one to complain to, unlike social workers under Social Work England

I also think we need to really test the assumption that it is professionalisation that will attract and retain more people, and also crucially whether this is aligned with the interests of people with cause to draw on care or support makingrightsmakesense.wordpress.com/2023/02/05/nur…

Interesting post, but while it might mark action, it still seems a leap to conclude a register of care workers makes a significant difference to status, pay, recruitment & retention? Given how much it would cost, this needs far more scrutiny?

@neilmcrowther Will this be reflected in the development of professional bodies to regulate the standards and quality of work from those employed in these newly created care careers?

@Hazelgrove_3 No, they just know they’re operating in a culture which will allow them to get away with it-most of the time.

👇What makes a good social worker 'bad' - becoming deceitful in manipulating proceedings & failing in a duty of care to P & duty to the Court Is it those above them, caseloads, stress & pressure, a zest for power & control twitter.com/AshcroftBen/st…
Ben Ashcroft@AshcroftBen

I understand why the attainment of Social Workers is becoming shorter. Social Workers are good people who do the work they do to make a difference. They don't go to university to become a bad Social Worker. It's often above them. The caseloads. The stress. The pressure.

‘I battled Britain’s broken social care system, frightened & alone, for almost 10 years. We had to sell my dementia-stricken mother’s home & care costs topped £600,000.’ One daughter’s harrowing account of a mess politicians have routinely ignored but will face millions of us

@sadiewaterson @neilmcrowther I’d like to see less 3rd sector involvement (please no more locally funded “advocacy” services who act as poorly informed handmaidens to incompetent LAs) Replace them with direct service user engagement.

@neilmcrowther How to get more innovators and digital pioneers on the boards of third sector orgs and local government to grow shared vision of what might be possible?

Social care innovation requires a publicly funded incubator, free from the direct influence of local council commissioning practices, with a long term view, and insulating innovators from the fragility of the 'market' in order to experiment & take risks. Discuss.

@Haloabletec It really isn’t just about inadequacy in statutory social care. It is about apathetic communities, political complacency and poverty of intelligence and skills in those representing those communities. Failure runs rampant throughout.

Great question! So why does the social care conversation focus on residential care, when 80% of people over 65 live in their own home? ndti.org.uk/news/new-resea…

@Haloabletec I think the bigger question is the safety and well-being of those 80% still living in their homes and what percentage of that group was unable to access the support they needed due to lack of community provision.

@jadewelshy Apparently the justice system is only operating in certain postcodes. Check out the Law Society blog regarding “legal aid deserts”. You are protected in law theoretically only.

@juliesharp86 @claretarling @IntegratedNHS @NHSAbility Often “advocacy” is little more than assisting you to write a letter of complaint with the assumption that you lack the necessary literacy skills. The definition is very fluid depending on your postcode. If you live in a legal aid void, no one will act on your behalf.

@legalfutures Let's hope the #SRA ensures families receive accountability when there is evidence a solicitor lacks integrity and whose conduct could be considered improper & dishonest by an ordinary person
