As much as you can: Be good at something. Be kind to people. Speak up. Give people reason to remember you when a question comes up that you could answer. Connect people to others where both benefit from the connection. Be helpful and honest in your critiques. Be kind to people.

A good example in rendering is radiance caching, which was big in the 2000s but then was replaced by brute force path tracing for offline rendering and was kinda dead for about a decade. Now though radiance caching and neural variants are back, this time in realtime rendering.

If you are a young graphics researcher always keep this example in mind. Similar things have happened in graphics (though neural nets will always serve as example number one across fields in CS!). I would advise as a default doing about half your work on popular trends to ensure career robustness and the other half on things your community thinks is dumb. Basically run a diversified portfolio.

Congrats to all the fine folks that put on #BlenderConLA I can only imagine how hard it is to put on a conference for the first time in LA, and I think they did a great job. Met lots of lovely people - new enthusiasts to Oscar winners, and the venue worked well. 1/2
