Given that Thiel does in fact donate to nonprofits I don't think he meant never give to nonprofits. I rather suspect he meant what the article says he meant: don't support the giving pledge and don't deprioritize for profit work in the name of a fairly arbitrary philanthropic goal.

@Chris_arnade (So that I don't have to reply to everyone mad at me, yes I agree that his happiness with the situation is not necessarily the most important thing, we should still probably do it regardless, but if we're framing it as being for his benefit it is an important thing to know.)

I met John in Phoenix. He had set himself on fire the day before, freebasing a perc 30, and refused to go to the hospital because he didn't want to lose his favorite spot behind the garbage bin, since it was only a block away from dealers, and perfect to piss in. He had a government room he didn't use, because catching on fire (something he did every now and then) set off smoke alarms. He also thought it was cursed and monitored by the same people who had held him captive on an island in the middle of the pacific -- and island he escaped from three months before by swimming the 400 miles. He showed me an arm, covered with burns, that he claimed was where a shark had bit him. John should not be out on the streets setting himself on fire. If you cannot see that, then I can't help you

the “people are homeless because they refuse housing” line is so infuriating bc ut comes from a real place, but what people are actually refusing is parternalistic control. People do want housing, they just don’t want curfews, bureaucratic bullshit, sobriety requirements, etc.

With ABS coming this year, there's a battle forming at the top of the zone. Here are the pitchers that had the most high fastballs in the zone called balls last year.

@HistoryBoomer he’s just a guy who thinks of post hoc excuses for whatever right wing thing of the day is. Unlike most of those accounts he’s just not a colossal asshole personally.

This is just posturing, macho nonsense. Wanye claims to be a clear, smart thinker—not like those libs—and then he imagines a system where we just shoot all people he thinks deserve it, or maybe he shoots them, I dunno. Not even Russia executes rapists. Also, he hates dogs? WTF?
wanye@xwanyex

If you asked me to shoot this guy in the head at 10 AM, I’d meet you for breakfast at 10:15 in a good mood. There’s nothing here. I’d be more broken up about shooting a sick dog. And I fucking hate dogs.

The actual difference here is that liberals *aspire* to read in a way that conservatives don’t. A subscription to the Atlantic or the New Yorker that they never read is liberal tithing for poor church attendance.

Actually the mainstream stuff I have seen _has_ been pushing the "he's a saint" narrative: an ICU nurse. A saluter of veterans. Good son. Lover of puppies. It doesn't matter! He doesn't have to have been an alter boy (and hell, maybe he was!) He shouldn't be dead.
Justin Stapley@JustinWStapley

I don't think anyone but far left agitators are saying that Pretti was a saint. We're simply saying he shouldn't be dead. Why is that so hard for people to understand?

There are about 12,000 ICE officers. There are about 35,000 sworn NYPD. The latter have been filmed (by themselves and others) in almost every interaction for 10 years. And yet NYPD has had fewer questionable incidents over years than ICE has had over a few months.
Carl@HistoryBoomer

I agree it's hard to determine exactly how bad ICE is behaving from a few (dozen, hundred, thousand) isolated (semi-isolated, inundated) awful incidents, but those incidents are so damn awful, they suggest systemic problems. Renee Good had an agent walk around her car for no sensible reason, twice getting in front of it. Two agents came charging up, screaming at her to get out of her car, and immediately grabbing at her door handle, when the sensible approach of any experienced law enforcement officer would have been to calmly approach and engage her in conversation, and only then ask her to step out of the vehicle. When she (foolishly) starts to drive away, Ross immediately drawing a weapon and shooting three times at a middle-aged suburban mom with a dog in the back is batshit insane. (Yes, yes, tell me she could have been a killer. You've seen people go nuts on Cops! Please. If your people skills told you Good was a killer, you need to stay home forever.) Sure, Renee Good's death is an isolated incident, but all three officers involved behaved terribly. Add that to all the other isolated incidents, and the decision to mask these officers as if they were Central-American paramilitaries, and a pattern of systemic disaster emerges.

This schmuck is actively encouraging confrontations that will inevitably lead to violence. It’s not the job of random people to police law enforcement. Stop pretending this it is a useful activity. Responsible leaders shouldn’t be encouraging it. There are legal remedies for when federal officials are doing things wrong. But these are just attempts to irresponsibly encourage confrontations to score political points.

As Richard notes here, one of the most galling things is that conservative media is unable to play it straight or do hard work even when they have a point on the underlying issue (i.e., the fraud scandal in MN is very real)

Nick Shirley, the right's new favorite journalist, is confused by the most basic things about how childcare and health care work. His work immediately fell apart. As I wrote for @unherd, he embodies the right's human capital problem. unherd.com/2026/01/nick-s…
