No, that's incorrect. On July 3, 1988, the US Navy cruiser USS Vincennes shot down Iran Air Flight 655 (an Iranian Airbus A300 civilian airliner en route from Bandar Abbas to Dubai) with two surface-to-air missiles, killing all 290 aboard—including 66 children. It was a case of mistaken identity amid tensions in the Persian Gulf. The US expressed regret, investigated it as an accident, and paid $61.8 million in compensation to families in 1996 (without admitting legal liability).

@RepBaumgartner Critical care doc here. I’m routinely at work at 11:30 pm trying to save lives at risk because of problems you perpetuate like gun violence and poor healthcare access. Stop trying to fund violence and until then stop your whining and get back to work.

Painfully ironic. Let’s look at the facts behind the noise. Two of the five “IMGs” everyone is upset about: Elena Ahrens — 43 peer reviewed publications, 400+ citations, Research Fellow in the department of Anesthesia at Harvard. Dr Adil Manji — 25 publications, over 1,000 citations, h-index 8, postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Both of them trained and worked at Harvard before residency. Ask any Program Director, they will tell you the same thing, when someone has already worked within your system, proven their competence, and demonstrated strong work ethic firsthand, they become a far more reliable and desirable candidate. This isn’t favoritism, it’s informed selection based on direct experience. But that nuance is lost on those who don’t even understand the fundamentals of graduate medical education. These are not “average” applicants. These are elite, globally competitive physicians who would be top choices in residency programs anywhere in the world. Residency selection is not about passports. It is about merit, performance, and potential. The real question isn’t who is “US-born” vs “IMG.” The real question is: Do patients deserve the most qualified physicians available? Because when the bar is this high, the answer is obvious. And for the record, anesthesiology is not some closed door specialty, many IMGs match into it every year.

Over 1500 medical students applied for anesthesiology residency at Harvard. 5 of the 18 coveted spots (28%) were filled by foreign medical students.

@SeeFisch The rhetoric is being pushed by far right wingers who have too much time on their hands peddling conspiracy theories, anti vaccine propaganda & earth is flat agenda. Their opinions carry no weight n the hard working IMGs know better than to interact with them. Thanks Dr Fischer

I will not be engaging in this "IMGs are stealing American Jobs" nonsense. I feel we need to push back on this xenophobic hate-mongering. Half the doctors in some states are IMGs and we are dependent on them. Also, can you imagine how horrible those IMGs who matched must feel with this public shaming?

Is there anything worse than a crying baby on a plane? I wish parents would control their children. It’s so disruptive. I refuse to believe a baby cries for 10 hours. At some point this is just bad parenting, right?

My mom just called me from Iran through her landline. I haven’t spoken to her since February. She said that Israel and the US are bombing the regime nonstop. They taped all the windows because the building shakes constantly. I asked if any civilians are getting hurt, and she replied “No, No, No. No normal civilians are getting hurt” Everyone is hanging in there and counting the days for this regime to end and for the return of the Shah. 🇮🇷

A 32yo man is brought to the ED after his wife found him "gasping for air" and "shaking" in his sleep at 3 AM. By the time he arrives, he is awake, alert, and annoyed. "I just had a weird dream, I am fine. Let me go home." Vitals are 120/80, HR 72, SpO2 99%. Physical exam is 10/10 perfect. You run a quick ECG and see THIS

After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today. I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby. It has been an honor serving under @POTUS and @DNIGabbard and leading the professionals at NCTC. May God bless America.

@Razarumi Statins do not JUST lower cholesterol and LDL ( bad cholesterol )… for south Asians , it is even more prudent to get on a statin as aggressively as is possible.. and if unable to tolerate statins then the newer generation PCS K 9 inhibitors ..

Fair point. I agree that diet, exercise, and metabolic health are fundamental. Thanks for sharing your experience and kudos for being so diligent. (I have also made lifestyle changes to that effect). But for many South Asians, the issue is a bit more complicated. Research shows we have a higher genetic predisposition to cardiovascular disease and often develop it earlier, sometimes even with moderate cholesterol levels. That’s why doctors recommend statins—not instead of lifestyle changes, but alongside them as an extra layer of protection based on risk. Some of the patterns researchers have observed among South Asians: • Heart disease often appears 5–10 years earlier • Higher rates of insulin resistance and diabetes • More visceral (abdominal) fat even at lower BMI • Cardiac risk can emerge at comparatively lower cholesterol levels So ideally it’s lifestyle and medicine together.
Ali Zafar@AliZafarsays

Respectfully disagree sir :) here’s why. Disclaimer first… I’m not a doctor. Just sharing personal experience and the advice of some physicians I personally trust because they emphasise lifestyle before lifelong medication. I’ve struggled with undesirable cholesterol levels through my adulthood. Recently I started researching health and fitness more deeply and tested things on my own body while tracking regular blood reports under professional guidance. Twice I was able to bring high risk cholesterol markers down to completely normal levels within about 3–4 weeks through disciplined diet and exercise alone. All documented. What I learned was simple. When I slip on diet and exercise, the numbers rise. When I fix my lifestyle, they normalize again. Same pattern with blood sugar. Which made me think about the doctors who advised statins immediately. Don’t get me wrong… medication certainly has its place. It saves lives. But I often wonder why the conversation so rarely begins with fixing the root cause instead of masking the symptom. Shouldn’t diet, movement, and metabolic health be the first prescription and pills the last resort? How many articles do we read about that? But…. I could be wrong. Do your own research under professional guidance. Health is wealth. Food is medicine. Knowledge is power.

Drinking just water in the morning, when blood volume is lowest, may dilute electrolytes and increase dehydration. Adding a pinch of sea salt can help retain water in the bloodstream and improve how you feel.
