It is with profound sadness we share the passing of Illinois State Police Canine Riggs. Riggs, who faithfully served the people of Illinois alongside his handlers, sergeants Steve Ent and Jeremy Moyer passed away unexpectedly November 19, 2024, from a cardiac event at the age of 10. Riggs graduated with Canine Class 75 in the spring of 2017 with his original handler Sgt. Jeremy Moyer of District 11 (Troop 8 ). In 2018, Canine Riggs was assigned to Sgt. Ent and worked with the Statewide CRIMPAT Team. Together, they worked tirelessly to protect the people of Illinois and this country by disrupting the flow of illicit narcotics and currency throughout our borders, while helping to dismantle drug trafficking organizations. During his impressive 8-year career, Riggs helped seize 220 kilograms of cocaine, 105 kilograms of heroin, 131 kilograms of methamphetamine, 2,032 pounds of illegal cannabis, 97 firearms, and more than $5 million in US currency. Canine Riggs was a loyal, beloved partner and team member whose presence will be missed dearly. Our prayers are with Sgt. Ent, his family, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside Riggs during his distinguished career. We pause to honor Rigg’s memory and give thanks for the incredible work he did to keep our communities safe.

It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of two of our own: Corporal Luis Paez & Deputy Sheriff Ralph “Butch” Waller. Both were tragically struck and killed by a driver on Southern Blvd while conducting traffic enforcement. Deputy Ignacio “Dan” Diaz was also critically injured in the crash and is currently fighting for his life. Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of our brothers, honor their memory, and support their families during this devastating time.
