Survival and safety after neoadjuvant chemotherapy or upfront surgery for locally advanced colon cancer: meta-analysis ➡️ doi.org/10.1093/bjs/zn… This systematic review and meta-analysis of seven studies involving 2120 patients with locally advanced colon cancer found that neoadjuvant chemotherapy is associated with a reduced hazard of recurrence and death, as well as improved 5-year overall survival and disease-free survival rates, compared with upfront surgery. No significant differences in perioperative complications or mortality were found, but neoadjuvant chemotherapy decreased the risk of incomplete resection. In conclusion, neoadjuvant chemotherapy appears to offer oncological benefits in the treatment of locally advanced colon cancer. @mcnaughtonjenna Having a later deadline for discharge prescription requests throughout the week and weekend would make a difference.

@ClearThinker66 @DrEilidhMaria @timricketts_ It is a distal obstruction so anticipate patients would present earlier before that point, but still possible. Was more emphasising the value of pr in patient with ?obstruction, rather than associating it with faecal vomiting.

Surgeons of twitter: am I correct in saying that listening to bowel sounds is a waste of time? Similarly, ordering abdominal X rays for ?obstruction. ICU/medics: how do you feel about giving Hartmans in hyperkalaemia?

@DrEilidhMaria @DocJimmyP83 @timricketts_ Agree that complete constipation with faeculent vomiting is likely to need imaging regardless. But I do feel that PR is probably under-utilised in assessing constipation - it’s a useful guide in terms of whether to “treat from below or above” (enema/glycerine supps vs macrogol)

@macsurg We had the full spectrum of weather when we were there - and the added drama of a potential volcanic eruption stopping us getting home...
