@cocainechippy @DeepNotShallow Are you basing that on data? The reason I shared the rail classification data is because the speed standard you are using greatly exceeds the existing operational system. Can we do class 7 or greater on abandoned ROW, no probably not, but class 4 seems well within reach.

@EdWinters102 @DeepNotShallow I don’t expect it to just exist I am saying that most abondonded right of way are not good enough for intercity rail to run effectively on said ROW

Trains in America cost 4-5x more and take 10-20x longer to build than in France and Japan. Those countries have stronger unions, higher wages, more environmental protections, and more red tape. The real difference? Eminent domain and a government that actually functions.

There's finally a plan to complete the train to Longmont, only two decades after taxpayers started funding it. (Giving us a chance to update our highly-sophisticated tracker)

Globally, there are 195 recognized countries, and the United States typically allocates funds to approximately 180 of them annually, totaling around $68 billion. These funds could significantly address domestic challenges within our own nation. This is your money, my money & our kids' money. It's far more important that it remains in your pocket.

Every socialist scheme boils down to the same formula: take wealth from those who create it and redistribute to those who vote for you. They dress it up as "justice" but socialists fundamentally believe productive people owe them something simply for existing. Look at Venezuela's oil revenues or Cuba's sugar wealth—socialists always inherit functioning economies, then systematically destroy them through redistribution schemes. They call entrepreneurs "exploiters" while living off the taxes entrepreneurs pay. The productive class builds civilization. Socialists then vote to confiscate it. Pathetic.

@TornadoNate The left in the US is super tiny and only starts at the DSA. This definition aligns with the other 96% of the world's political definitions. Utopianism is deeply mocked by left thinkers.

All the time you spend getting bluetooth devices to connect exceeds by a factor of ten all the time people in years past spent plugging in cords, and that is as succinct an illustration of the illusory nature of technological innovation in the 21st century as I can think of

I will never understand how it came to pass that American "conservatives" managed to completely cede the core value of "Conservation" to the American left. It's downright bizarre!

@PluginHyBrad That's self-contradictory. How did it help the car makers if it didn't hurt the used car market?

Fuck it, I’m going to say it. Cash For Clunkers was good policy, and saved the U.S. auto industry. It had near-zero effect on the affordability of anything, and doesn’t affect the used car market today even a little bit. You just want to justify your racism against Obama.

Every BOOMER with this take should look up the job they had in their 20s. Find the median pay for that job NOW. If you went to college make sure to include the cost of student loan repayments NOW. Include the cost of insurance NOW. Then look up the EXACT SAME first house you bought and let me know if you can buy it NOW. OTHERWISE STFU ABOUT THE DISCUSSION
Lee in Iowa@Lee_in_Iowa

Boomer here. I bought my first house after ten years of saving like crazy. And the interest was 14.5%. I don’t know where kids got the idea that they were due a house and new car at college graduation, but that’s NOT how it ever was.

@alanthefisher Long haul freight rail would probably be pretty hard to electrify reasonably. Short lines and urban areas out to the first yard should definitely be electrified. Good news is that even diesel freight rail is way more fuel efficient than OTR trucking.

@AndyMasley The chances that data centers will be used for the good of humanity seem incredibly slim. Further evidenced by the total lack of attempts at persuasion based on positive use cases.

I really think that the public's understanding of how data centers physically interact with their communities is bordering on a low level mass delusion. The actual numbers and impact just do not at all bear out how people feel about them.
CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil@CBSEveningNews

Days after voting in favor of a new data center in Indianapolis, Councilman Ron Gibson says his home was struck by 13 gunshots while he and his family were asleep. He says a handwritten note reading “No data centers” was found under the doormat.

It would be fine to kill vast number of Iranian civilians by taking out all the bridges + power plants. Why? Because Iranians are "animals." Why are they "animals"? Because their government killed (even taking his numbers seriously) a fraction of that many Iranian civilians.
