@Molson_Hart @Handre Fair enough. But it's a good starting point to begin 'nuancing' from, and the reality is that the starting point in most western liberal democracies has become the opposite.

@Handre Japanese companies aren't exactly known for their intra-Japan competition. The UK privatized their rail and it failed. Private = good Public = bad is a bad and insufficiently nuanced take

The Japanese railway privatization of 1987 stands as one of the most devastating defeats ever dealt to statist transportation mythology. The government split the bloated Japan National Railways into seven regional companies, sold them off, and watched private ownership transform a bankruptcy-bound disaster into the world's most efficient rail system. JNR hemorrhaged money for decades before privatization. By 1987, the state railway carried debt equivalent to $200 billion in today's money while delivering mediocre service plagued by strikes and inefficiency. Politicians treated it as a jobs program rather than a transportation service. The predictable result: chronic losses, deteriorating infrastructure, and customer service that reflected government monopoly arrogance. Private ownership changed everything overnight. The new JR companies slashed operating costs by 40% within five years while dramatically improving service quality. JR East alone now generates annual profits exceeding $3 billion. These companies invest billions in cutting-edge technology, maintain punctuality rates above 99%, and operate the world's most advanced high-speed rail networks. They achieved this without a single yen of operational subsidies. The transformation reveals a core dynamic of transportation infrastructure: private companies must satisfy customers to survive, while government monopolies need only satisfy politicians. JR companies diversified into real estate, retail, and hospitality around their stations, creating integrated profit centers that cross-subsidize rail operations. Government railways never innovate this way because bureaucrats face no market pressure to generate returns. Meanwhile, Amtrak burns through $2 billion in annual subsidies while delivering third-world service across most routes, and European state railways require massive taxpayer bailouts every few years to stay solvent.

@andrew_leach @PierrePoilievre Fun fact. When you read that 98% of university professors are ball-less Liberal Party toadies, that may well be an underestimation. Have a quick read of this ball-less Llberal Party toady's TL and you'll see what I mean. Do his students laugh at him? I suspect they do.

Fun fact: @PierrePoilievre ran on an industrial carbon price rising to roughly the same rates being talked about today and an effective oil sands emissions cap. Now, more than a decade later, he's telling you that meeting any emissions reduction is impossible.

@RosieRocks28 @sunlorrie @Eric13666093 Yes. Canada is the kid born with the winning lottery ticket. Next door to the richest economy in history, with free access to that economy and culture. Then grew up the spoiled and irresponsible child and pissed everything away. Chose virtue-signalling over character.

COLUMN: Is Canada becoming a one-party state? While the federal Liberals smugly refer to themselves as Canada’s natural governing party, the historical record suggests it may be true, despite the danger it poses to democracy. torontosun.com/opinion/column…

@sunlorrie "Is Canada becoming a one-party state?" No. It already is one. That transition was complete with Trudeau's third term.

Nobody pays taxes on 100% of their income. Even if you earn $1 million/year, you still don't pay taxes on all of it, with the tax rate being 0% on everything below the personal exemption amount. This is a stunning example of basic financial illiteracy from a federal party leader.

CTV News is losing $40 million a year. Their proposed solution is to demand $30,000 per employee in government subsidies that wouldn't even cover half the losses. What's needed is consolidation and innovation. More subsidies only delay the inevitable. blacklocks.ca/network-losing…

@AdamZivo Liberals in Canada are only concerned about Ukraine and Russia because they heard Trump and the US are on the other side. For decades, Liberals were soft on Russia in its various iterations.

I occasionally feel pangs of gratitude that Canadian conservatives, unlike their American counterparts, largely resisted Moscow’s overtures and maintained their moral clarity on Ukraine.

Since MAID has been enacted in 2014, approximately 90,000 Canadians have chosen dying by this method rather than painful, drawn out, or medically complicated deaths. This represents 0.2% of the Canadian population and accounts for approximately 2% of all deaths since 2014. /2

In my weekly @Quillette newsletter, I ask how media will treat the 5th anniversary of the 5/27/21 unmarked-graves social panic Honest journalism would require them to admit complicity in hyping a fake story—which most outlets still refuse to do Here's how they square the circle

Canadian identity needs to come from something other than anti-American sentiment and false nostalgic myths, such as us burning the White House - that was the British. Creating a whole identity contra to something else is not an identity. We're better than this.
