@Exentiostep @TipsyTaterTot @PrincePatrique @MishaalRahman Thanks. We don't have analytics to know for sure, but plenty of people seem to have success with background, though it does seem fickle. My own iPhone runs background sync for 2h+/day. One tip is that if you force-kill (swipe away) the app, it reportedly stops background tasks.

Heads up: Users are reporting that the Google Messages app won't let them send or receive RCS messages if the OS is rooted or hasn't passed GMS certification (like most custom ROMs). It seems that Google Messages has implemented Play Integrity API attestation checks, so be aware if you root your device or install a custom ROM, you may lose access to RCS in Google Messages.

@louispilfold I am not sure what are you trying to accomplish. You need a synch without GUI on iOS? I’ve never tried running non-GUI apps on my iPhone :p

Is there a nice notes app that has a HTTP API you can use to export your notes? Preferably without the fuss of oauth. I've been using Apple notes but I can't work out how to get my data out.

last remaining part of my data backup is in place: all my photos from iPhones are being pushed from the App to my NAS using Syncthing. Syncthing is now managing about a terabyte worth of data.

@jedwill do you have the space locally for said library? syncthing slaps for this. it has clients for most os's (idk abt iOS) and it's free, open source, just works (most of the time) and all communication is encrypted and authenticated with keys and identifiers

Is it possible to make a music library I can access remotely on my laptop while having the library in a hard drive at home?

I have been using Obsidian Sync for two years, and it's an excellent service; I strongly recommend it. However, I know a lot of users use iCloud for sync. So, I will switch over for a few months and see what works and what doesn't. I will likely document my findings. Are you using iCloud to sync your Obsidian vault? Have you had success? Where does it fail? The one annoying thing out the gate is the brief pause in the beginning while Obsidian checks that all documents are local. It is kind of a catch-22; they need to do this for Obsidian to reliably have all the docs at startup, but when you are in the middle of something, starting Obsidian now takes longer. They have a skip button that skips the check and starts the "Obsidian initialization" with customizations. Obsidian Sync is well worth its value, so I highly recommend it, but let us do an iCloud shakedown just to see what happens.

Resilio Sync looks like being very close to what I need (fast, flexible, with good iOS and macOS apps) but I see complaints about it not being open source and potentially being abandonware 😞 — the obvious alternative is Syncthing, but not having an iOS app is a deal-breaker.

I have been using @obsdmd for over two years now. Prior to picking Obsidian, I used most of the other apps that were available. (Roam, Notion etc) These are the reasons I stick with Obsidian, personally. 👇

Dropbox continues to completely miss the mark. I just wanted my files. Synced. I would remain a paying customer forever. But not if they play with my data. arstechnica.com/?p=1990819

Even though I've been using my Dell w/ Debian 99% of the time, you just can't beat MacBook build/screen quality. Spent some time cleaning up and optimizing my workflow so I can seamlessly switch between the two. @syncthing coming in clutch for syncing files between my 2 machines

It's time to finally try out obsidian.md @obsdmd I'm a huge Apple Notes believer (it's simple and just works out of the box), but I want a way to visualize and dump all my ideas, search and categorize them in a better way.

@sophianegativa @Jarsen I'm quite happy with Obsidian + syncing via Syncthing, even to my phone. But running Syncthing on the phone is a drain on battery and I'm not sure if it's possible at all if you have an iPhone.

Evernote has become unforgivably slow & clunky. I want to free myself from its tyranny, but I have 15 years of notes in there... has anyone successfully made the switch from Evernote to something else? any advice?
