When I saw The Last Samurai (2003), the final reel got caught in the projector and a close-up of Tom Cruise froze and then burned up. Only time I ever saw that happen. Thank you @HelenDeWitt

I can’t believe the people not taking Helen’s side! She’s a brilliant novelist in some sense because she’s not someone who thrills to recording hours and hours of promo material. Just let her write!

@cathyparkhong I did find Wifi. The video called for 6-8 hrs of filming, with a lot of work on logistics & preparation before & possible postproduction work after. W-C is apparently not legally required to make exemptions for disability. I have explained the details on my blog.

The Helen DeWitt incident really does highlight the divide in modern literary culture between rare but true genius and the dominant hyper professionalism/MFA culture that privileges self-promotional skill over actual literary work

Having been on both sides of the “this writer is completely nuts” equation I can say that it’s sad that DeWitt didn’t get that prize but understand that there’s a limit to accommodating writerly chaos and disfunction.

Writing this blog post probably took longer than the very minimal promotional requirements. Why does anyone feel bad for someone who is upset they were being paid over $150,000 for three PR appearances? LOL

I think people are missing a lot of background re. Helen DeWitt. Yes it does sound mad at the face of it but they should perhaps do a cursory Google before just saying stuff on twitter. I wonder if the prizegivers did the same amount of research tbh
