After his denial, the rooster crows, marking his failure and the depth of his fear (John 18:18, 25-27). 2️⃣ The second time is after the Resurrection, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. The risen Jesus has already prepared breakfast: “When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread” (John 21:9). Jesus invites the disciples to eat, then turns to Peter and asks him three times: “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” (John 21:15-17). Three denials by one charcoal fire. Each question of love allows Peter to replace denial with affirmation, healing the wound of betrayal. After the third confession, Jesus commissions him: “Feed my sheep” and “Follow me” (John 21:17, 19). Peter, the one who once denied his Lord, is reinstated as the shepherd of the flock, a foundation for the Church. Furthermore, the details deepen the symbolism. ✔️ In the denial, a rooster crows, a sharp, piercing call that exposed Peter’s weakness and called him to sorrow. ✔️ In the restoration, there is fish grilling on the charcoal fire. This echoes Jesus’ earlier promise to make Peter and the others “fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19; Luke 5:10). ✔️ The grilled fish, prepared by the Lord Himself, becomes a sign of renewed mission: Peter is called once more to catch souls for the Kingdom, not through his own strength, but through the grace of the Risen Christ. This story is for every one of us. We all have our own “charcoal fires”, moments of fear, compromise, or denial that still bring regret when remembered. Yet the Risen Lord is willing to meet us there. He prepares a place of encounter, asks for our love, and restores us to service. Failure is not final when placed in His hands🇻🇦
