Rafael Rubio, a Venezuelan data analyst working for the NYC Council, was ordered deported today by Immigration Judge Charles Conroy. This was due to his long-term overstay of a 2017 B2 tourist visa, which required departure by October 22, 2017. Rubio had no legal right to remain in the U.S. and no valid work authorization according to DHS and ICE. The federal government emphasized his status as an unauthorized individual with a prior arrest for assault in New York (though the case was dismissed and no conviction occurred), framing him as a "criminal illegal alien" illegally employed despite local claims of protections. @Phase2Deport

Today, an administrative immigration judge ordered the deportation of Rafael Rubio, a City Council employee. This is an affront to justice. A dedicated public servant with legal authorization to remain in the country, Rafael showed up for a routine immigration appointment and, despite following the rules, he was detained and has now been held for months. He should be immediately released.

California told El Cajon police that conducting a welfare check on an unaccompanied child could violate state law -- because it might lead to sharing information with federal authorities. Think about that. A child who may have been trafficked or abandoned. And the state says checking on them is the problem.
