Mid-year update! Now 55 years of convincing reasons why the stock market should go down, superimposed over the 67x increase in the S&P 500 during the same time period (8x when adjusted for inflation). Tariffs are the provisional reason why stocks should have gone down this year.

@Mangan150 @KeruboSk My grandmother, born in 1899, lived with us for 7 years in my childhood, and I remember many stories. The 3 siblings who never grew up in the pre-vaccine era. The 6 adult relatives, all unemployed, who moved in during the Great Depression. The nephew taken prisoner in NaziGermany

@Sir_Kneecap @Mangan150 Great. The kick in the pants for me was, after 2 years in biz school, my 14- and 12-year-old kids were leaving me far behind on the ski slopes. Worse, I was exhausted after 3 runs, but they wanted to ski all day. Wait hours per day in the lodge? I decided to get in shape instead.

This is a driving force in my life. By the time my dad was 40, he was done physically. Overweight, high blood pressure, could barely walk around the block. He was a great athlete as a kid. When I was 12,he decided to go surfing with me (which he did when he was young). He was so out of shape he couldn’t paddle 20 yards. One of the saddest days of my life. I just wanted the joy of surfing with my dad. I’m 56 now, and my sons and I do all sorts of wonderful, physically difficult things together simply because I refuse to not be able to do them. I plan to be able to until I die.

When I finished undergrad in 1993, we faced the same thing. They were called "McJobs" - a bunch of mini jobs we had to do for a few years to piece together an income until we could actually start a job. My first job after college was typing up waybills in an airport warehouse.

Update: one year ago today the $VIX closed above 50, a signal with a 100% win rate over the following year and an average S&P 500 return of 35%. The S&P 500 has gained 38% since then, adding to the list of times when it paid to be greedy when others were fearful. $SPX
