@thekitze As a Canadian, I'll say it depends on a few things. Mostly what type of work you do and expected salary. If it's low, go for Canada. If it's medium or higher, America.

@NotA_Bull I'd disagree. If you want to be rich, it's better to focus on the income side of the equation.

Index funds are for people who have accepted they will never be truly rich. If you want to change your family's future, you have to FOCUS on 1-3 individual stocks. Agree or Disagree?

@Prominent_Bryan I have never heard of anyone being picky about where their fruit comes from. I doubt this is real.

People keep saying “$1M won’t be worth much in 25 years.” Okay, so what should people do? Build $0 instead? Hold cash while inflation eats it? Of course future dollars will be worth less. That’s exactly why you need assets. Inflation is not an argument against investing. It’s the argument for investing. A $1M TFSA in 25 years is not some perfect retirement plan. It’s one piece of the puzzle.
Canadian Investor@TheCADInvestor

A Canadian couple does not need a miracle to build wealth. They need: 2 TFSAs $7,000 each per year $14,000 combined 25 years a simple index fund with 8% returns That can become ~$1.1 million combined. Tax free. Before RRSP, before taxable accounts, before pensions.

I still remain shocked that barely any families have generational wealth. NOBODY among your ancestors stashed $100/week into US equities held in trusts, or even just taxable accounts? I throw bands every month into a blend of growth ETFs like $QQQ and defensive dividend ETFs like $SCHD and $SPHD. I’m pretty positive that a heavily-funded 529 is also enough to send a half dozen kids to college while you change beneficiaries as needed. Unless my kids are absolute imbeciles with money, they’ll be the first among my family tree to inherit the bag.

Apparently if you invested $100 in American stocks at independence you would have $238 million today 🇺🇸🇺🇸

1.1million is virtually nothing in 2026. Canadian condos go for 1million. Houses 2million. And by the time your 8% per year compounds into 1.1million, Canadian M2 will have grown another 1000% and 1.1million will be the new 110k. Tax slavery.

@Meodread While it's possible at the income only level, it's very uncommon. I think on Ontario it's around $1.25m income.

Bruhh, I tried to do the math but shit isn’t matching. Canadian tax law doesn’t even work that way. I don’t know what tax lawyers and accountants you used but mannn some ain’t right. Also, Tax avoidance is legal , tax evasion is not . If it were easy , every Canadian founder would be in Paraguay before an exit .

My Canadian client sold his SaaS for $4.2M. CRA wanted $1.9M. He'd already moved to Paraguay and completed a complete restructure of the business 18 months prior. His tax bill: $0. Canada called it "tax avoidance." I call it "reading the tax code." Same exit. Different passport stamp.

@HomeLoanBill I'd say it's the combination of prices and rates for me. Total cost of ownership is what I'm after. But the rates are the biggest lever.

@MarkSauer18 @CDInewsletter I don't think it includes those things, but that's a fair question. Having said all of that, I still believe that income testing is best. However, I just think the limits should be lower.

@amredman @CDInewsletter I wonder too if this net worth estimate includes the present value of their CPP, and other DB pensions. Not things that most people think of as part of their net worth..

The average Canadian baby boomer household is worth $1.5M, yet seniors get OAS, medical/pension tax credits, and income splitting. Gen X, who are rapidly approaching retirement age, are almost as rich and in line to get the same benefits. Seems like an unnecessary strain on gov't budgets. Let's start with OAS reform.

@CDInewsletter Of course there is the average vs median thing. A small number of people with massive net worth can skew the average.. I'd be curious to see the median.

@CDInewsletter While I agree in principle, using average over median weakens the point IMO.
