The Ministry welcomes the UK’s decision to suspend tariffs on tuna products from the Maldives. This is a very positive step that gives Maldivian tuna a fair opportunity to compete in the UK market. While the Maldives is currently the 9th largest supplier of tuna to the UK, our products are leading in the sustainability segment, and this move further strengthens the recognition of the sustainability credentials of our fisheries. We extend special appreciation to President @Mmuizzu for his strong leadership in prioritising the fisheries sector and advancing strategic international partnerships. Most importantly, the benefits of this decision will flow directly to our fishers, their communities, and our processing sector.

Dr Mohamed Muizzu@MMuizzu

I warmly welcome the United Kingdom’s decision to suspend tariffs on tuna imports effective 20th May 2026. This important development will support British consumers while delivering meaningful benefits to the Maldives’ fisheries sector, strengthening fishermen’s incomes, supporting island livelihoods, and expanding opportunities for sustainably caught Maldivian tuna in the UK market. The Maldives is globally recognised for its world-leading pole-and-line tuna industry and its commitment to responsible and sustainable fishing practices. This milestone reflects the close partnership between the Maldives and the UK and the importance both countries place on sustainable trade and economic resilience. I thank the UK Government and all partners who contributed to this positive step forward for our fishermen and our economy. 🇲🇻🇬🇧

Proud moment for Maldives and our team @ #IOTC2026, our first time hosting the meeting. We led on 3 resolutions: mobulid rays, statistical reporting & BBNJ, & helped secure binding yellowfin tuna catch limits alongside South Africa. Science. Sustainability. Solidarity🎣

The 30th Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), hosted by the Maldives for the first time, concluded today following a week of negotiations on the conservation and management of tuna and tuna-like species in the Indian Ocean. The Session was attended by 29 Members of the Commission, 2 Cooperating Non-Contracting Parties (CNCPs), and 2 observer countries. We extend our sincere appreciation to the 225 delegates who participated in the week-long meeting in the Maldives. The 30th Session resulted in the adoption of seven resolutions, including binding catch limits for yellowfin tuna and swordfish, as well as strengthened compliance measures. The Ministry thanks President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for his leadership and support in hosting the 30th edition of the meeting in the Maldives. We also express our appreciation to all stakeholders, including MSPEA, @MTCCPlc , @MoFAmv, @mformpcmv, and @hdcmaldives, for their invaluable support in ensuring the smooth conduct of the Session. During the Session, the Maldives tabled and led negotiations on three resolutions that were successfully adopted by the Commission: the resolution on the conservation of mobulid rays; the resolution strengthening mandatory statistical reporting requirements; and the resolution promoting the objectives of the IOTC through cooperation with the BBNJ Agreement, which upgraded last year’s recommendation into a binding resolution of the Commission. The Maldives also played a key role, together with South Africa, in securing the adoption of binding catch limits for yellowfin tuna. As host of the 30th Session, the Maldives reaffirms its commitment to science-based, sustainable, and equitable management of tuna fisheries in the Indian Ocean, and to continued regional cooperation for the long-term sustainability of shared marine resources.

The Maldives continues to engage actively at the Global Seafood Marketplace 2026 held in Barcelona. At the “From Maldives to the World” panel, Minister @Shiyamaldives underscored a key message: sustainability must be consistently and fairly rewarded across global markets. This is particularly timely as the Maldives receives landmark recognition under the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch programme, the first country-specific ratings for tuna fisheries. The focus now must be on ensuring that responsible fisheries are supported through equitable market outcomes. #FromMaldives

MFORMPC together with Horizon Fisheries Pvt Ltd, Ensis Fisheries Pvt Ltd, Blue Saltwater Pvt Ltd and Big Fish Maldives Pvt Ltd are at The Global Seafood Market Place 2026. This is the premier global seafood marketplace, connecting the entire seafood industry for three days of business, innovation, and networking. During the fair, we hosted a side event at the Maldives Pavilion under the theme “From Maldives to the World.” The session featured a panel discussion with the Honorable Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam; Policy and Stakeholder Engagement Director at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Josh Madeira; and Strategic Consultant at Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company, Athif Shakoor. The discussion explored key challenges and opportunities shaping the Maldives’ fisheries sector, with a particular focus on sustainability, market access, and value creation. The panel discussion was held to promote and celebrate the ratings update by the Seafood Watch for Maldives. This is the first time, Seafood Watch has introduced country-specific ratings for tuna fisheries and the Maldives stands at the forefront of this landmark development. #Frommaldives @ensisgroup @BigfishMV @mifcomv @MFAORmv

A Proud Moment for One-by-One Fisheries in the Maldives!! Years of continuous advocacy by our retailers, industry, fishers, and government have finally paid off. Maldivian skipjack and yellowfin tuna earning “Best Choice” status is a true milestone for sustainable fishing.

Why can’t we be happy when others do well? Be prepared for haters to come out in full force when you share your success story especially on social media. They might ridicule you, spread rumours about you or even spew harsh words. Don’t worry. Focus on what’s right & keep going.

Really bizarre that @etihad is refusing to accept the first name on a Maldives passport as the first name & is insisting my name Farahanaz is a surname. I wonder if other Maldivians have had this issue?

“Contrary to reports in the media, the Israeli Government does not own or have rights to the property that houses UNRWA's Sheikh Jarrah compound in East Jerusalem. The Israeli Government's claims are false and illegal.  There has never been a transfer of property. UNRWA has leased the land from the Government of Jordan since 1952.  It is now being seized in blatant breach of international law. The International Court of Justice and @‌UN General Assembly have determined that Israel's presence in East Jerusalem is illegal and must end as rapidly as possible. Israel has no sovereign rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and the application of its laws there is unlawful.” — @‌UNLazzarini
