There are no two wines within the same type as different in mouth feel and flavor as Coke Zero is from Diet Coke. It’s why Coke Zero’s huge growth comes at the expense of regular Coke (and even zero calorie Pepsi drinks) and not Diet Coke.
Nick Burns@NickBurns

Wine is just wine to most Americans, and Grana Padano is as good as parmesan is as good as pecorino. But just see what happens when you say that Coke Zero is the same as Diet Coke. Like Robert Conquest said, everyone is an Italian about what they know best.

@Fenrirtheicewo1 ‘’Heck, did you know it was actually rare for Europeans to set foot in African soil over the fact that they could barely survive walking in the terrain’’ Africa was known as White Man’s grave. Europeans refused to walk inland or even step off boats into port cities.

Funny enough if you look at history most of the time they did pay for them with guns and liquor so that they could go fight the other tribes and then sell them as slaves in both the European and Islam slave trade. Honestly, African history with outside forces is insanely complex, not just... what Hollywood traditionally shows. Heck, did you know it was actually rare for Europeans to set foot in African soil over the fact that they could barely survive walking in the terrain so they just hired tribes around the oceans to guide some in or just do the whole things for them.

@bondagehookah The average modern European has no connection to his history, and probably doesn't even know who Charlemagne is. I don't like a lot about Islamic culture, but they appreciate that they are part of a culture that existed before and will exist after them. That's laudable.

@18503qwsf3n @flangelianity No they don’t, literally never ran into this speaking French in France for months at a time as an american. They immediately clock that someone is foreign and speaking with an accent but almost always they’re more delighted than anything to see a foreigner speak it well

@hotscenekid4eva Honestly this is the bigger issue I see with our gen in terms of food, people cornering themselves into eating bagel bites for the rest of their lives rather than just trying something, it’s just sad idk, you don’t have to like something but just try it

Unpopular opinion but Islamic Civilisation is the only true rival the West has ever had and will ever have. They, alongside us, are the only ones who genuinely seek to understand the objective truth underlying the world. It's just that Muslims think they have found it in the form of Islam; it is the most perfect, eternal revelation. The sunnah is infallible. The Qur'an is infallible. Why would you ever apostate from objective truth? If you do, it's no different from cutting yourself off from the source of life. You deserve death. No tolerance of other religions and ideas; they have to live a life of complete humiliation and subservience to Muslims. Not accepting the truth means you cannot live a normal life. It is utterly totalitarian. We may consider it utterly barbaric but the success speaks for itself. Largest religion in the world. Keeps growing everywhere. Gets converts from Christianity, especially women who are comforted by the clear rules and confidence in its eternal truth. Islam represents a challenge for us in the West : We have found the perfect truth and the perfect society. We're done. Now we will defend it to the death, kill our enemies and enforce our faith. Deal with it. We in the West are the only ones who likewise believe in Absolute Truth and Objective Morality. Our liberals believe gay marriage should be legal everywhere. Our Catholics believe in natural law that applies to the human race as a whole. Our communists believe in an objective trajectory of society with objective moral values that go alongside with it. Us Europeans are universalists. We aren't satisfied with just having a way of life. We want to justify it, explain why it's correct not only for us but also for you. But our religion was ambiguous. Jesus was just some guy. The gospels are contradictory. The bible was written by multiple authors. The protestant reformation. The enlightenment. We're uncertain. We struggle. We are Faustian. We are never satisfied. We criticise ourselves, change our minds, change our whole societies, change everything that we believe in. Continuously striving to finally get it right. We are the civilisation that did the holocaust and abolished slavery. The rivalry between us and them is if our endless drive towards the truth can eventually create a society that is more sustainable and powerful than anything Islamic society can produce, one that can overcome the violence and totalitarianism inherent within Islam through our faith in freedom and open discourse. I'm my opinion, in the 21st century, Islam clearly got an advantage. Conservative social policies created massive birth rates and now they massively outnumber us. Our self criticism was so intense that we are now letting people like this guy who would kill us and enslave if he could in our very own countries. They're brutally taking advantage of our liberalism and openness to systematically weaken us and take over our societies. Weak! It remains to be seen if Western civilisation can, once again, learn, innovate, change and transform itself to defeat the challenge posed by Islam once again. The rivalry must continue.

Was in Paris a couple months ago for wife’s 40th. We splurged and did a handful of Michelin stars and similar and kept noticing that it was mainly Americans, along with a smattering of other foreigners, eating at them.
Intern Pierre@internpierre

On food: France has 600+ Michelin Star restaurants. The US has ~200, despite a population 5x larger. A €5 bottle of wine in Spain beats a $25 bottle in California. A €2 espresso in Rome beats a $7 oat milk latte in Brooklyn. This isn't snobbery. It's math per dollar.
