An Iranian man left this comment on my YouTube channel. This is without a doubt the single best explanation of the reality facing Iranian people today👇 "As an Iranian, I can tell you the situation is no longer just political—it's existential. We are trapped between two collapsing structures: one internal, one external. On one hand, we face a deeply dysfunctional government, led by the Supreme Leader and the Islamic Republic’s unelected institutions. Decades of economic mismanagement, suppression of dissent, and brutal ideological control have alienated multiple generations. No one believes in reform anymore—because every attempt has either been co-opted or crushed. But here's the paradox: We are also terrified of regime collapse—because we've watched the aftermath of Western intervention in countries like Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Afghanistan. Each was promised freedom; each descended into chaos, civil war, or foreign occupation. So no, we don't trust the U.S. or Israel. Not because we support our regime—but because we know how imperial powers treat ‘liberated’ nations in the Middle East. Freedom, in their language, often means vacuum, fire, and permanent instability. Right now, many Iranians live with three truths at once: The Islamic Republic is morally and politically bankrupt. The alternatives offered by foreign actors are not liberation—they’re collapse. A bad government is survivable. No government is not. We are not silent because we agree. We are cautious because we’ve learned—too well—what happens when superpowers decide to "help." In a sentence: Iran is a nation held hostage by its own regime, but haunted by the fate of its neighbors. We are stuck in a house we hate, surrounded by fires we fear more."

Is there any #ombudsman who can protect customers from big companies like @skyireland taking our money without providing a service and insisting on dealing with only 1 account holder. That account holder has to wait on underfunded helplines for hours while trying to work.

@SkyIreland @SkyHelpIreland The promised call back today ( day 5 of no TV or internet) has not happened. Husband moved an important board meeting to facilitate it. Virtual assistant doesn't understand english. We're new clients from Virgin Media. I see us reverting to them.

@travisakers Poor people generally know how to spend their money wisely. Read Poor Economics by Profs Banerjee & Duflo. You cannot buy fresh vegetables living in a food desert with no fridge and no cooker.

SNAP was established to provide low-income Americans access to adequate and healthy food necessary for basic nutrition. Over time, the program has expanded to include virtually all grocery items, including foods with little or no nutritional value. SNAP was never intended to be a subsidy for non-nutritive or luxury food items. Taxpayer funds should promote physical health and reduce long-term healthcare costs associated with poor nutrition. Diet-related illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension disproportionately affect low-income populations. Redirecting SNAP spending toward nutritious food can directly improve community health outcomes. By aligning spending with nutritional intent, the program better fulfills its mission while helping reduce public healthcare burdens and ensuring that funds are spent on essentials. All individuals deserve small joys such as cookies or soda, but those should come through personal finances or donations, not federal nutrition assistance. SNAP’s purpose is not to eliminate the small pleasures, but to preserve the integrity of its use for essential nutrition. SNAP benefits should be limited to the purchase of nutrient-rich foods as defined by the USDA and public health experts like nutritionists and pediatricians. Approved categories should include: -Fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables (without added sugar) -Whole grains, oats, rice, and pasta -Lean proteins such as poultry, fish, beans, and eggs -Low-fat dairy products, milk, and fortified plant-based alternatives -Cooking essentials like spices, herbs, and healthy oils Items that should be excluded from SNAP purchases: -Sugary beverages (soda, energy drinks, sweetened juices with artificial flavors) -Snack foods with little nutritional value (candy, chips, processed fried foods) -Alcohol, tobacco, and non-food items (already restricted) This seems like common sense.

@SydneyLWatson It was a shot show when I worked in Texas in the early 1990s. The same scams are coming to private insurance in Ireland now and the same management philosophies have infiltrated socialised medicine in Ireland and the UK.

Did Americans actually ever have decent health insurance and reasonable payments? Or has it always been a shitshow? I've only been here long enough to experience the "shitshow." 🥲

Today I had lunch with twelve young Irish people -- a wonderful bunch in their early 20s working on rockets, biotech, software/AI, etc. I enquired about whether any were planning on leaving Ireland over the next 3 years. All hands but one went up. I asked the holdout why he was staying; he clarified that he was also going to leave, just not in the next three years. Mobility is a wonderful thing, but it feels worrisome if everyone in such a group concludes that they ought to emigrate. This desire seems to generalize. A 2023 study suggested that more young people want to leave Ireland than any other EU country.

My new cleaner doesn’t have an account and wants me to send money to her husband’s account. I just told her I don’t know her husband and he’s not the one working for me, so she should go and open an account today and send me the account number. Funny how this was the same thing with my previous cleaner.
