@DevinOlsenn There was nothing wrong with your review, no matter how much noise they may make. I hope Rivian can accelerate UHF into something awesome someday, but it's not there today and there isn't anything wrong with admitting that.

I want to make an update to this post for all the people defending Rivian and faulting me for comparing this to Tesla FSD. My Rivian “Universal Hands Free” review The name implies it is more capable than it really is. The cost ($70 CAD) is way too high for what it offers. The claim that this works on ANY marked road is downright unsafe since it does not work well on most roads other than highways. The system is not intuitive to use and can feel unsafe at times as a result. This is a good first attempt at a highway lane keep with adaptive cruise control - the same system my sisters 5 year old BMW has (for free). The big difference is BMW doesn’t call it universal hands free and charge for it. Rivian should restrict this to being used on highways only or at the very least market it for highways only. Showing it driving around city streets implies to me the end user that I should be able to use it there without any issues. I like Rivian but it’s so crazy to me seeing Rivian folks dismiss my video simply because I compared it to FSD. In a world where FSD doesn’t exist - UHF is still bad.
Devin Olsen@DevinOlsenn

Rivian Universal Hands-Free vs Tesla Self-Driving This was my first time testing Rivian's new Universal Hands-Free, and I was honestly surprised by how it performed. I understand this is their first attempt and it will only improve from here, but truthfully, it is worse than any version of FSD or Autopilot I have ever used. I respect Rivian as a company, but I always try to remain unbiased in my opinions, so here are my unfiltered thoughts on where UHF stands today. Hoping to test it more as the system receives major updates! Hope you all enjoy the video. @itskyleconner They both seem great, but I'd pick the Cybercab for long drives any day. It looks way easier to sleep in.

@anshelsag @JoshKale Pretty sure the closest analog you could even draw here to a deal that Tesla has ever had is the Tesla / Hertz program, but that was nothing quite like this partnership.

@probablyoptimus @JoshKale I'm not going to continue this pointless argument after this point, but the context is everything, and its quite clear that many of the Tesla fanboys who are making these claims are completely ignoring that Tesla was once in the exact same spot and are choosing to ignore that.

Nobody understands how much of a disaster this Rivian <> Uber deal is Rivian lost $3.6 billion last year on 42k deliveries. That's $86,000 of value destruction PER VEHICLE that left their factory. Their solution? Partner with Uber to turn a $58K camping SUV into a robotaxi... to compete with Tesla's Cybercab... YIKES Every 12-18 months, this company finds a new partner to write a check: - Amazon: $1.3B equity + 100K van order - VW: $5.8B joint venture - US DOE: $6.6B loan - Uber: $1.25B robotaxi deal (today) The moment they announced the Uber deal, they admitted they're pushing back profitability AGAIN to fund an autonomy program that can't even handle stoplights. Tesla's Cybercab is purpose built at $25,000 with no steering wheel. The cost per mile math isn't even close. The Uber deal is to deploy 50,000 robotaxis by 2031. Slight problem: The car doesn't exist yet. The factory doesn't exist yet. The autonomy software doesn't exist. Manufacturing is HARD. good luck have fun

@mweinbach No? They're just continuing to support existing games in VR for now and not introducing new ones. They still totally plan to kill it off with time and focus on mobile.

@anshelsag @JoshKale Nope. Again, my point is that this isn't a disingenuous analysis and that whether or not Josh is invested in Tesla (which I have no awareness of) the idea that you can't somehow question Rivian's unit economics and automotive gross margin today is a pretty lame take.

I really don't think it's that disingenuous. Tesla has been dealing with backlash from the entire ICE community, short-sellers and naysayers for over a decade now. Similarly, Rivian will go through the same heat until they can prove that they can scale into an auto manufacturer compatible with the future unlike many traditional ones, and the world will be better for it if they do succeed, so I truly hope they do. Even disregarding the post in question, talking about the challenges they'll face and mistakes they'll make along the way is okay, Tesla has also made many of them as well.

@probablyoptimus @JoshKale Right but you’re criticizing a company with Tesla’s unit economics of the Model S and X days before the 3. And all the critiques are of the $58K model and not the $45K model. It’s just disingenuous.

@yacineMTB If you’re conflating a feedback button to collect training data (that does not decrement Like count) with a Reddit downvote button, you are just looking for a reason to be mad about something.
