@web3FAF @leonabboud I've been living in Dubai since 2006, and I don't fear for the safety of my wife at all. Nobody will harass a woman because she's wearing a miniskirt. However, when I go back to France, the old habits come back and I tell my wife to be careful.

I’ve lived full-time in four countries in my life.
From Canada to Colombia, now Dubai.
Here’s my no BS cancel-me-if-you-want review of Dubai.
Pros
1/ Global business hub
I won’t list the obvious ones like safety, clean streets, low taxes.
One real advantage is the network.
Dubai positioned itself as the business hub of the Middle East and Africa.
People in your industry randomly hit you up saying they’re here for a conference.
If you care about networking, there’s no better place to be.
2/ Snap-your-finger convenience
Yes, Dubai has cheap labour.
No, these people aren’t slaves with confiscated passports.
They’re working-class people from developing countries working here voluntarily.
This creates a market where things that are insanely expensive in the West are affordable.
Cook, cleaner, massage, 10-minute delivery.
All within the hour.
If you don’t enjoy chores, Dubai allows you to buy your time back.
3/ Government and banking just work
Last year, I had to renew my Canadian ID in Montreal. I had to wait four long hours at the government office!
Here, renewing your ID is as simple as a walk-in no waiting health checkup.
I've never had to queue up a single minute.
Banking is also mostly digital, cards get shipped to you, ID verified at your door.
The work comes to you, not the other way around.
4/ Hospitality is unmatched
You will not find service quality like Dubai anywhere else.
Best restaurants, best experiences, best attention to detail.
The city was literally designed to be convenient.
5/ Yes, cheaper than other major cities
Compared to New York, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai is cheaper.
I lived a decade in Montreal, one of Canada’s “affordable” big cities.
Sad truth today is that the same lifestyle you have in Dubai costs MORE in Canada, even before taxes take their cut.
Inflation has wrecked any city that used to have a reputation to being cheap.
6/ Crypto friendly
If you work in crypto, the convenience alone is worth a fortune.
You can buy real estate with crypto. You can deposit large amounts in your bank account from your crypto exchange and never get asked a question.
If I was running Unfungible my business in Canada, I'd have probably lost access to my business bank account multiple times.
7/ Alcohol isn’t widely accessible
This is a personal preference.
Alcohol isn't widely available. You can only buy it in private venues and hotels.
I find myself having the occasional drink a lot less here.
Net positive for health.
8/ Locals respect their government
My Western mind took time to comprehend this, but locals are genuinely proud of their government and what the UAE accomplished in 50 years.
Unlike where I lived previously, there is no polarity between people. It's one people, not the right, left, or centre.
Cons
1/ Very little social spontaneity
In other cities you make random connections.
Back in Canada, you could chat with the barista at the coffee shop, Uber driver, and realize you both study at the same university and could become friends.
In Dubai, that level of social spontaneity doesn't exist.
In Dubai, the working class and professional class don’t mix.
Those spontaneous micro-moments don’t happen.
2/ Small local market
The whole country has 11 million people. Tiny!
If you want to build a UAE-only business, it'll be hard.
You’ll quickly realize you need to expand outside the country to grow.
3/ Not walkable
Dubai took inspiration from Las Vegas for its urban planning.
Hotels are mini-cities, clusters, silos.
If you step outside, you need a car.
Dubai Marina and Downtown are exceptions, but the rest is car-dependent.
4/ The nightlife dynamic
Let me be blunt.
There’s a big market for working women and plenty of men paying for that entertainment.
You can often tell who’s there for a transactional exchange.
It changes the vibe.
5/ Fear-based order
The city is extremely orderly, but that comes with heavy fear of fines.
People live with this quiet anxiety of doing the wrong thing.
6/ Smoke friendly city
I enjoy my occasional cigar, but the smell of cigarette smoke everywhere you go can get annoying.
7/ Not pet friendly
If you’re used to bringing your dog everywhere, Dubai will frustrate you.
Most venues and even main streets aren’t pet friendly.
8/ Pay to play entertainment
In Canada I could chill in a park, have drinks, visit free museums.
Dubai is pay-to-play.
Few are the free experiences. If you're leaving home, it's probably to go swipe your credit card somewhere.
9/ Short-term friendships
There's that one question you always ask people you meet in Dubai "How long do you plan on staying?"
Most people are here temporarily.
Everyone is here with an agenda: make money, advance career, experience the city.
But eventually, people plan to move on.
In two years I’ve already said goodbye to three close friends who moved back abroad.
Bonus: Superficial relationships
There's plenty of that if you're trying to play, or succumb to the game of status signalling.
If not, there are so many genuine people here that you'll hang out with. Some of the nicest people I've met were in Dubai.
If all you've had here were superficial relationships, perhaps it's an opportunity to turn the mirror internally and ask yourself why that was so.

Using @idOS_network made me realize how broken digital identity is today.
So many platforms make me do the same steps again and again and proof who I am.
With idOS, identity becomes self sovereign: I hold and control what data gets shared, and when 🤷♂️

Ever felt left out like the kid who never got picked by their crush in high school?
That’s been Bitcoin for years the main character but somehow always on the sidelines of real utility.
@beyond__tech is finally changing that.
Real BTC moving across chains without wrapping, actually being part of everything instead of watching from the bench.
It’s Bitcoin’s glow up era.
