@jbobbink How do you account for the constant shuffling of organic placement on serps as well as AI overviews continuing to creep more and more into commercial/transactional queries? Zero click continues to grow and sometimes Google just flips a switch and poof, no organics for 15 places.

I told a CMO their SEO would generate 2.4M euros next quarter. They finally approved the budget. SEO has a credibility problem. Every other marketing channel can project revenue. Paid ads. Email. Social. They all have forecasting models that finance teams understand. SEO? We show traffic graphs and hope for the best. I built a forecasting model that translates GSC click data into revenue projections. Baseline scenario versus growth scenario. Seasonal pattern recognition built in. Configurable conversion rates and average order values. When I showed a CMO the baseline projection for Q2, it was clear. Without investment, organic revenue would flatten at 1.8M euros. With a content refresh program, the growth scenario hit 2.4M euros. That is not a traffic chart. That is a business case. And it got approved in one meeting. For enterprise organizations, this solves the eternal problem of justifying SEO headcount. When you can show projected revenue impact with seasonal adjustments, you are speaking the language of the C-suite. Mid-size companies benefit even more. You do not have a dedicated SEO team. You need to prove that the one SEO hire or agency retainer is worth it. Revenue projections do that. The seasonal pattern recognition is underrated. If your business has peaks and valleys, the model accounts for that instead of showing a straight-line projection that nobody believes. SEO is not going to get bigger budgets by showing impressions. It is going to get bigger budgets by showing money. Most SEOs still have not figured out how to do that.

That level of acceleration could be them doing a big blast campaign to existing customers to get caught up from not doing it. I’d watch and see if it slows down or if the pace continues. Do you know about how many customers they serve in a day? Easy math: 10-15% response rate is considered great for review requests sent from an automated platform. They could be using tap tags though which generally gets a very high review rate.

@Jon_Cunningham I think they’re legit and they asked all their customers for it. I just don’t know why. Why now??

My main competitor, the big dog in the area, has been in biz since 1971. Until last week, they had about 50 reviews. They’ve gone crazy since and it’s a little disheartening.

@KristanHawkins I would argue that it’s actually quite in line with the pro-life ideal: protect life. The vast majority of people on death row were involved in or directly caused the loss of life. How is that inconsistent?

Hey, so generally this is actually part of trafficking. The victims are groomed and put into positions to recruit “or face consequences“ that seem too insurmountable to escape. I’m not saying that is what happened with her but I can tell you it is a large part of trafficking to position victims in a way that they will catch charges if they walk or flip.

@RyanJones If a junior’s first response to that isn’t a story about the results they got from experimenting with side hustles or their own site, I’m immediately turned off. There is literally no excuse to be learning everything about SEO from somebody else.

a question I ask new hires is where do they learn about or keep up on SEO from. Most of the junior people lately are naming the known spammers or crap SEOs on youtube. This industry has so much damage to undo.

You asked and you received (thanks for attending my TED talk). Unfortunately I’m not sure there is a solution in the current structure of global governance. The same thing that funds/drives all the innovation is, by nature, required to collect as much capital/profit as possible. I don’t believe that changes with Medicare for all or any type of government managed system as that ship has sailed with the selling out of Washington. It’s all the same pockets getting lined either way. The only way I see it changing is total deconstruction/reconstruction. What do you think?

@Jon_Cunningham @adamcarolla That’s a lot of words to say you personally can never trust a profit based health care or pharmaceutical industry. To an extent I agree, witness changes in delivery after the not for profit health systems turned for profit. Hard to reverse but should we explore? Medicare for all?

Growing up in a house of a doctor and a pharmaceutical rep, as well as having worked in the medical industry, I’ve been exposed to more than your average person. I know enough about the human body to tutor nursing students in biology/chemistry. Of course I’m not a biomedical engineer or scientist but what I do understand intimately is the corporate side of the medical industry, especially the drug world. So I know how to read studies/white-papers and I know how to look at the entire funnel from concept to results. Efficacy is not something the FDA has navigated well. They are a captured agency by the corporatocracy that drives this machine. Fauci was one of the worst actors in the space and had a track record long before Covid that should make anyone question his motives. I say that as someone who is generally pro capitalism. I’m not saying that scientists creating drugs are bad. I fully understand the benefit to humanity that the work in your field has birthed. But I don’t subscribe that the down funnel machine has people’s best interest in mind, and the Covid vaccination scandal (including the propaganda machine that demonized any alternative) has been a perfect example. No scientist could look at that and say “the FDA was right” without consciously turning a blind eye to the maligned intent of the outcome (money). That why I say your position is ironic.

@Jon_Cunningham @adamcarolla In all seriousness, Jon, I would defer to you on advice re mechanical engineering. How much do you know about the inner workings of the human body? Development and approval of pharmaceuticals? So why the pretense?
