Desiderata by Max Ehrmann Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

lots of AI cos starting to experiment with paid marketing so here’s my take: Paid acquisition is a tax on your product's defensibility. the moment you can't out-spend the incumbents and competitors, you die. build channels that get cheaper as you grow or you're just renting your growth

project hail mary was unfortunately a middling adaptation of a good book. the script has the unfortunate affect of “language model populism” - where every single line has to be some sort of punched up comedic zinger yet still unremarkable. visuals were uninspired and trite and more or less identical to other space movies. everything good about the film comes from the wonderful world scaffolding of the book and the hard science fiction of it all that lets you suspend disbelief on the alien rocky the movie doesn’t really try to get into the xenolinguistic stuff even at the depth the book tries (someone called it “arrival for idiots” which unfortunately hit ) the thing that elevated the book is the commitment to a hard science fiction engineeringporn fiction at a level nobody else is able to write. the direction of the movie doesn’t really convey the same feeling successfully, and you’re left with flat characters, an alien that is more human than several humans i know, and a marvel populism gosling and the german woman are great as actors, but this movie will not be remembered in a year. it is disappointing to see people do so little with a quarter billion, insane acting talent, and incredible source IP

The reason AI still can't write well is that it writes what IT wants to say, not what YOU want to say. Writing is thinking. I expect this to be fixable, but not via typical "scale to AGI" approaches.

The paper I’ve been most obsessed with lately is finally out: nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news…! Check out this beautiful plot: it shows how much LLMs distort human writing when making edits, compared to how humans would revise the same content. We take a dataset of human-written essays from 2021, before the release of ChatGPT. We compare how people revise draft v1 -> v2 given expert feedback, with how an LLM revises the same v1 given the same feedback. This enables a counterfactual comparison: how much does the LLM alter the essay compared to what the human was originally intending to write? We find LLMs consistently induce massive distortions, even changing the actual meaning and conclusions argued for.

Based on the way we've structured society currently, yes. Look at the impact social media has had. It is a double-edged sword, yes, but the bad currently far outweighs the good. Just look at what's happening with kids and the effect it's had there. The companies responsible for this are more concerned about sheer price and investors than they are for the toxic effects they are creating within society. Therefore, it's not a leap of faith to suggest that AI, being as powerful as it is and its capabilities will continue to increase over the next five years. If the people leading it are more focused on the incentives of investors, PE, Wall Street et al., In this, we are potentially going to have an even worse outcome. That's why, at the stage we are, we have to steer it carefully, not hold it back. The technology is very powerful and very useful for humanity, but it has to be steered for the benefit of all humanity. That's my unpopular point.

“It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” — Jiddu Krishnamurti Political homelessness. Autistic exile. These aren’t failures of adjustment. They’re the juxtaposition between clarity and gaslighting. As AI reshapes society in the coming decades, those who understand Jiddu’s point will be proven right. — Live 📿 Circa 2026 A humble observer

A great deal of modern governance theatre rests on a fragile assumption: that institutions driven by revenue will voluntarily constrain themselves when the cost of restraint becomes materially significant. Recent reporting on Meta should put that assumption under severe pressure. Leaked internal documents reportedly suggest the company projected that roughly 10.1% of its 2024 revenue, around $16 billion, would come from scam and prohibited advertisements. The same reporting suggests users were being exposed to an estimated 15 billion higher-risk scam advertisements per day. If those figures are even directionally accurate, the lesson is serious. We are no longer speaking about incidental failure. We are speaking about a system capable of identifying harm, quantifying it, and continuing within the same operating logic because mitigation carries economic friction. That is not a communications problem. It is a governance problem. More precisely, it is a political economy problem. And that is why the debate around AI cannot be allowed to rest on pledges, voluntary principles, and self-attested responsibility. Where harms are already visible, measurable, and publicly legible, self-regulation has shown its limits. In frontier AI, where the systems are more opaque, the capability surface is broader, and the societal externalities may be more profound, those limits may arrive with even greater force. The real question is whether our oversight institutions have enough depth to matter. 1. Enough technical literacy to inspect. 2. Enough independence to challenge. 3. Enough authority to intervene. 4. Enough resolve to do so before capability outpaces accountability. That is the governance question beneath all the branding, all the white papers, and all the carefully worded commitments. Who governs when restraint becomes inconvenient? Sufficed it to say, the current realities are not aligned towards society;  They are aligned towards  Wall Street investors  and financial outcomes.
