@Stsantek Socialising across the aisles is great. That can be done in a cafe, canteen or lounge area. It does not require alcohol. Anyone who feels it does lacks the character I want to see in those deciding the date of my country

If anything we should have more opportunities for socialising for everyone involved in politics. Politics is not done by sitting alone reading tweets. People should be around people from their party and other parties daily, the pub enviroment is great, with some added restrain that I want to see people have around drinking at all times. I often just order a Diet Coke which has caffeine to help me stay alert. We could have more civilised politics if we regularly faced in social settings the people we debate furiously. I do not think it is wasted time or money either.
Stella Tsantekidou@Stsantek

Well yes. We need to be precise about what behaviour we are criticising. Getting visibly drunk should, and I believe is, criticised in Parliament. But saying having a pint at 9pm on a Wednesday evening with a colleague while you both wait to vote (which just requires you to walk through the right lobby, and nobody decides how to vote on the spot) is just so ridiculously innocent. I am assuming people outraged at this also do not understand what the voting process looks like late at night. MPs are not in the chamber for most debates (that would be literally impossible and undesirable). Not all votes are particularly controversial or important either, many are just procedural. We should explain these things those who know better than jump on the opportunity to make people think of all MPs as subhuman.

I really dont understand why, considering Burkean principles Parliament cannot be dry considering it is a place of work. Subsidised meals & snacks i can get with but we should be expecting our parliamentarians to not be under the influence of drink or drugs. In fact there should be random D&A testing for everyone in Westminster.

Hannah Spencer has a problem with MPs having a pint. Her party wants to legalise heroin.

@callumseuk And if I went for lunch with a project partner and then returned to the office plastered, my boss would rightly have something to say to me

actually i think it’s a very british thing to discuss important matters over a drink in a pub. if anything, i feel it puts mps back in the heads of ordinary brits. and i think this shows so called ‘working class’ hannah doesnt really get the working class traditions of the UK.

@Stsantek Why should it be tolerated that people in the Westminster bubble are routinely plastered in their place of work when these people are deciding the date of our country. If I was drunk at work it would be misconduct and it's arguably more important that MPs have a clear head

Yeah no, sorry, MPs are often cooped up in Parliament for 15 hours a day, they will have a drink with journalists or colleagues and will still be discussing politics -their job, as Hannah says. I don’t like the blanket demonisation of MPs and Hannah should know better after she had already been accused of not taking the job seriously because she took part in that dancing event in Portcullis house. It was unfair to call her unserious about that then and it is unfair of her to now suggest that MPs having a drink in between votes which take up all night is by default bad.

@lukejcr Ordinary people do not drink at work. The fact that you believe this is normal and acceptable is a prime example of why so many of you are unfit for office

🚨Breaking news: MPs are human and sometimes have a drink. Classic clickbait farming 👎 MPs work long days for constituents, and yes, sometimes share a drink in the evening with colleagues. Last week I was scandalously spotted with… an alcohol-free pint or two between votes 😱 But sure, let’s talk about that instead of the Greens’ wacky policies. Trying to distract us, maybe? 🙄

@AaronGogley @Roysenaji @ChrisChavez Given the issues of the past few years, I would like to see arrangements like what Sawe and Adidas are doing here become far more prevalent. This is a nominal cost compared to the size of the sponsorship and it's a really good look for the sponsors, athletes and the sport

For those wondering if we can trust this new 1:59:30 marathon world record by Sabastian Sawe since there have been so many Kenyan runners caught doping and using performance-enhancing drugs in recent years...it’s always hard to have 100% certainty, but credit to Sabastian Sawe, his agency and his sponsor (adidas) for doing their best to be transparent. Some context for folks: Adidas included a budget in Sawe's contract to provide funds to the sport’s anti-doping organization (the Athletics Integrity Unit) of about $50,000 to test him. Basically, they wanted to prove he was clean, as there was growing confidence that he would break the marathon world record of 2:00:35 set in 2023 by the late Kelvin Kiptum. They also wanted to avoid the doubt of Ruth Chepngetich breaking the women’s marathon world record in 2:09:56…and then having that skepticism validated when she tested positive for a banned substance. Sawe was reportedly drug-tested 25 times (this included blood and urine) in the space of two months in the lead-up to last fall's Berlin Marathon and that’s a pretty high number. He was not tested as frequently before this race but his coach Claudio Berardelli confirmed that the Athletics Integrity Unit sets the testing regimen and that he is on a higher frequency of testing than other athletes in 2026 because of the additional funding being provided.
Chris Chavez@ChrisChavez

OMG. 🇰🇪 Sabastian Sawe becomes the first man ever to break 2 hours in a marathon (legal conditions) in 1:59:30 at the London Marathon! Yomif Kejelcha 🇪🇹 runs 1:59:41 in his DEBUT. Jacob Kiplimo 🇺🇬 takes third in 2:00:28 All under the previous WR.

@Roysenaji @AaronGogley @ChrisChavez That's precisely the opposite of what this post was trying to achieve. It is literally making the case that Sawe has, very commendably, not more than probably any other distance runner to prove he is clean

@AlexPeasley @peckham65Grant @ODJchef I think most at Ipswich would be perfectly happy to have him back in the squad tbh. Wanted to keep him this year but he made it clear his desire to go to Pompey. He would almost certainly get game time if he stayed at Ipswich, as he did last time in the Premier League

I'm going to say this.. We are 16 points off the play offs. If Murphy is fit all season we have another 10 points for me, thats 6 points off.. We are genuinely a handful of proper signings away from achieving this. I am usually negative Nancy but I believe this. #pompey

@USRedTalk Mixture of factors. Your wages are much higher, you have fewer games, you have no culture of going to every game home and away for 30/40/50 years. Your working class fans don't expect to go regularly whereas that is what our game has been built on

So a club can sell its hotel to itself, sell its women’s team to itself, but West Brom are punished, they believe, for legitimate “in-kind” donations to the Albion Foundation, its charity partner that saves lives. Albion also believe the alleged PSR breach is “less than £2m”
