@xerxes_master @CodifyBaseball Yes and my point is that there are very big consequences for the players who choose to challenge those “strand of hair” calls, and that heavily de-incentivizes them from doing so. That should be obvious.

@JoshFrank2006 @ChrisHenrique I personally think the standard should focus around the fact that these are multimillion dollar athletes competing in a billion dollar industry with high financial stakes all around, and tough calls shouldn’t come down to human eyes trying to pick up a 1inch difference on 100mph.

@JoshFrank2006 @ChrisHenrique A person who trained for many years to call pitches, went to school for that training, practiced thousands of hours in real scenarios. can do a much better job of it than some guy who didn’t. Is that the standard?! ……..

CB Bucknor’s performance behind the dish is one of the reasons baseball has the ABS challenge system. Haven’t seen a guy this bad since Angel Hernandez.

@xerxes_master @CodifyBaseball And if he had lost the challenge, and the team was out of challenges by the 4th, then they have to sit and suffer through terrible calls the rest of the game while their opponent doesn’t. That’s the risk of challenging 50/50 pitches. It bring excitement and consequences….

I Pray You're That Stupid@xerxes_master·
@CodifyBaseball This is stupid. You can't tell me the pitcher or catcher who challenged this knew it was a strike. It was a guess. This isn't baseball. This system is brought to us by the sports gambling thing.

@Fog0627 @JustinMLB This is a matter of their overall histories, not just 1 game. By the way, CB had 26 incorrect calls in that game and Chad only has 12 in his. So even with more pitches, CB was WAYYY worse in his game.

@JustinMLB Most MLB calls challenged: CB Bucknor 8 (75 % overturn) Chad Whitson 7 (100 %) Tripp Gibson 6 (67 %) 22 umpires with 3-5 challenges Buckner faced 383 pitches… Whitson faced 275 pitches… Where’s the call for Witson’s job?? OR, IS THIS PURE RASCIST BULLSHIT??

@patmatt_12 @UmpScorecards Because at a quick glance, the assumption here is going to be “after all was said and done, the Yankees were favored by 0.55 runs this game”. That’s what you’d assume from the emphasized number. But that’s what the smaller number actually represents.

@patmatt_12 @UmpScorecards Except I feel most people care more about how the calls/officiating ACTUALLY affected the game, not how it *would have* affected the game if ABS/challenges didn’t exist. You know what I mean? Like put the “this is what would have happened if ABS didn’t exist” in the smaller font

@SophistryS @markpysykburner @WadleMason @BriskerSZN I’ll agree that his uncertainty regarding proximity to the wall adds a bit of difficulty to the play compared to if this was happening in the open field. But outfielders are very used to tracking while closing on the wall, so doesn’t make it too much less routine.

@SophistryS @markpysykburner @WadleMason @BriskerSZN It not factoring in the wall doesn’t really impact this situation much, because the wall had little Impact on this play. Yes he jumped because he didn’t seem 100% sure where the wall was but it was still routine even with the jump, and no jump was actually necessary.

@young_giac @CameronMaybin The real zone is 3D. They could implement that but I think they tested both versions and preferred this simplified one. I see no problem with using this one — consistency is all that matters and everyone knows what this zone is so the calls will be consistent…

I’m all for this…love it, but everyone commenting needs to know/remember: the new digital strike zone (that doesn’t 100% conform to the actual strike zone) isn’t entirely accurate. It’s just a vertical plane 8.5” from the front of the plate. According to the actual rules, these missed pitches (depending on pitcher arm, pitch type and location) were probably in fact strikes when the ball crossed the plate - if the plane were at the front of the plate and represented the real strike zone. Would love to see the @MLB implement an ABS system that accurately depicts the strike zone to reward pitching and not make the zone smaller for hitter and increased scoring. We see how increased scoring is working for the @NBA … 🤡

@How_bout_that_ @KentMurphy Also, typically when you critique someone’s work, you do so by comparing it to their peers — not the general public. If someone is in the bottom 5% of their chosen profession, perhaps they should choose a different profession.

@How_bout_that_ @KentMurphy They‘re only 80% accurate, on average, when it comes to close calls (you know, the calls they get paid for, not the ones 10 inches off the plate). And CB is probably closer to 70% accurate for those calls. That number has been improving; in 2008, the average ump was only 66%

@JKraziiii @SteveSoCrazy04 @iam_johnw I genuinely don’t watch either of these players, but if you‘re going to ask someone to speculate why one guy is getting spot minutes and another isn’t, and the guy getting them is LeBron’s son, his answer is not an unreasonable speculation. Doesn’t mean it’s the entirety of it.

@bradenkeith @MoonCall Yeah, the average MLB ump salary is 300K. I think most people would accept more public scrutiny for that payout — doing a job that the computer could easily be doing instead for the most part.

@MoonCall Can and do. Great customers call balls and strikes and will let me know if I miss the mark. Thankfully tho, to your point, I’m not booed by a stadium if I get it wrong. But I also didnt choose a profession that requires that.

If you’re not a baseball fan you will not know how much we needed the ABS. It used to be so frustrating to watch umpires completely screw the game up. Strategy for this is pretty fun. You get 2 chances to be wrong on ABS in a game. Choose wisely. I also could see where we don’t replace the home plate umpire but make them a common enemy in the stadium. Telling the man he’s wrong is a character in the show we all want to root against. Listen to the crowd in this clip. How fun is that.
Shelfy@RealShelfy

Absolutely electric lmao CB Buckner noticeably annoyed when he tapped the 2nd time only to be wrong again and listen to 40,000 people cheer for his incompetence 😂

@pierrebgood @CodifyBaseball But also, I think for the neutral fans who watch that out-of-challenges scenario play out, there will be the sentiment that it’s the team’s fault for losing their challenges to close calls — that you shouldn’t challenge unless you’re pretty confident you’re right

@pierrebgood @CodifyBaseball While that scenario would definitely piss me off, and I’m sure it will happen at some point, I’m currently very much enjoying the half-measure approach that allows us to watch umps get absolutely humiliated. Have you heard the crowd reactions to these challenges — its therapy….

@dmbkparker @BuffJE0920 @Jomboy_ Here it is. That is called shadow zone accuracy, a baseball width (around 3inches) in or off of the plate. The accuracy on those pitches has been improving over the years, and it’s at around 80% right now. That’s the average. So terrible umps presumably 70%

@YankeeLineups @BuffJE0920 @Jomboy_ I would love to see the numbers on that. Take all the pitches within say 3in of the zone and see a percentage. Thats a great way to look at it. Also have you been to a high school game lately? 6-8in may be giving them a bit much credit.

@BuffJE0920 @dmbkparker @Jomboy_ Because batters aren’t just challenging the obvious bad calls, they are also challenging borderline calls. And they get penalized for it by losing their challenges ability to challenge the obvious ones later on. Smart players and teams have a MUCH higher % on challenges

@YankeeLineups @dmbkparker @Jomboy_ If it’s so obvious and they are so bad at it, then why is the success rate on challenges by hitters less than 50%? The ones being challenged would be the obvious ones. And in AAA/spring training, they were usually not overturned. Most umps (not CB) are incredible at this

@dmbkparker @BuffJE0920 @Jomboy_ Yes and I’m telling you that % is misleading because it includes the obvious calls that a high school ump can make. A ball 8 inches outside. A ball 6 inches in the plate. If you strip the obvious ones away, the % on actual difficult calls is pretty bad.

@YankeeLineups @BuffJE0920 @Jomboy_ I’m just looking at the actual data put out here. One of the worst umpires in the league, 91% accurate, 94% consistent, +1.0 for the losing team. My question is, is it 100% or bust? That’s fine if that’s your opinion.
