While it looks unusual to see a fairing flex this much given so many years of seeing Falcon 9 fairings behaving more rigidly, let’s not forget how much more massive New Glenn’s fairings are.

Cool video of New Glenn’s fairing re-entry. For this flight we installed an exo-atmospheric reaction control system (RCS) in the fairing to control re-entry and enable recovery of the fairing. We’re planning a parachute recovery later this year, and the data from these fairings gives us the learnings needed to develop and refine that capability.

@Pinboard @NominalJoe This plan would've required hundreds of millions of dollars in infrastructure expansion for the single mission. And very important to note that was for Artemis 1. An unmanned test flight to visit the Moon. Had it flown on FH Bridenstack it would've been a flyby like A2.

@NominalJoe Bridenstine was talking about putting Orion on Falcon Heavy back in Trump's first term. The sticking point here is not a lack of commercial rockets that can fly this mission.

@NominalJoe Falcon is human-rated and you can launch your crew to LEO on that, then rendezvous with whatever stage you need for the lunar trip. There's no shortage of alternative architectures that would cost a fraction of SLS/Orion, the problem is all on the Congressional and NASA side

@ravener96 @deltaIV9250 Orion docking in LEO to a vehicle that then pushes it out to TLI was the plan. Nowadays however nothing in that chain can support it. Not Orion's pressure vessel, not NDS.

@brooklindevil @deltaIV9250 Designing around LEO assembly should really always have been the plan. Lets you launch in one unit if you get a big launcher, but also launch on multiple medium lifters for flexibility.

My weirdest gripe is that Orion should be smaller
So it needed to support 4 crew for 21 days. The CM is 10.4 tons. With the ESM it’s 26.4 tons with 1 km/s delta V
The solution is in Apollo. The CM massed 5.8 tons. Plans for a rescue configuration allowed it to fly 5 people

They were poor and hungry and most were sent to Aus for trivial matters like being hungry and taking a loaf of bread. We had capital punishment back then, the real criminals were dealt with that way.
