Thousands of LA families like ours are starting the new year paying mortgages on homes that burned down or remain uninhabitable because of the fires. This is our street after the Palisades fire 👇. Now it’s mostly empty lots, soon to be a massive construction zone. We’re a long way from being able to go home. I spoke with @CenlarFSB, who informed me that our mortgage forbearance is ending; monthly payments resume and we owe the last year. They asked if we can pay higher payments 🤯. MORE money for a home that’s uninhabitable because our entire town burned down?! NO, we can’t! We’re already been assessed higher property taxes AFTER the fire 😡! Meanwhile, insurers make our lives hell by refusing to pay for necessary things to make our homes safe or rebuild the ones that burned. Their business model is delay, deny, hold payments they owe you and make $$$. If you fight long and hard enough - often after hiring a public adjuster and/or lawyer - they may eventually cough it up, after they earned millions in interest that should’ve gone to homeowners. The most vulnerable, like seniors and low income households, fall by the wayside. They’re selling their lots for cheap because they’re out of options. Families are stuck; paying rent to live elsewhere, now facing mortgage payments (plus accruals for the past year), unable to return home.
