The Air Force was the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. My experience in pilot training was character building. I hated it and loved it. It’s possible. My pilot training class had two fighter’s to choose from. An F-16 and an A-10. My roomie got the A-10. I was #10 in the class so I chose the C-141 to Charleston. Again, best thing that ever happened to me. My first combat experience was dropping the 82nd Airborne into Grenada on the first night. I was a brand new copilot. I was quickly absorbed into the special operations world and worked closely with the SEALs and Delta. We did some shit. I was an instructor pilot and flight examiner as a first lieutenant. The C-141 took me to 70 countries in 20 years. Some incredible places that I never would’ve traveled to. I’ve met the most amazing people and crew members over those years. My best friends in life. I’ve been shot at by people who hate America. And I did it willingly with an American flag on my shoulder. I’ve shared beers with our allies and we’ve laughed. I’ve flown in combat multiple times and I enjoyed it. The Air Force sent me to Italy to run the airspace during the Bosnian War. The Air Force promoted me 3 times early. I’m sure it’s not the same but I’ll forever be thankful for the United States Air Force. Aim high. Fly, fight, win.

Another Air Force pilot training story. One morning, I was scheduled to fly a T-38 solo from my base in Columbus, MS. I took off at around 5:30 AM on a beautiful sunny morning. Just me and a jet. Wisps of clouds were hugging the Mississippi hills and fields as the sun rose. It was so peaceful and bucolic. As I climbed out, the only aircraft in the air at the moment, I plugged in my Walkman, played Christopher Cross “Sailing” and ripped some killer aileron rolls. I owned the sky. The power and freedom is indescribable. I was hooked.

This decision is cruel and inhumane. These are folks who were escaping brutal dictatorships, gang violence, and turmoil. These Cubans, Haitians, Venezuelans, and Nicaraguans came here legally and contribute to our South Florida community. Deporting them is a death sentence.
