Math prof at a non-R1 uni. I blame no one but myself for my smothering mediocrity.

Your new chair doesn’t have much substantive expertise but was a UFC fighter when he was younger. We expect him to minimize faculty complaints.

@3YearLetterman What is hilarious is that when you read the Declaration of Independence to them, they go on about being Irish, Australian, a New Zealander, etc. They are all Britishers and we know it!

I see this kind of moronic nonsense all the time. The current Democratic party is nowhere near "far left." Historically it is "right of center," about where Eisenhower Republicans were when I was a teenager. What has happened is that the entire US political spectrum has

Heart warming, isn't it? But then @ass_deans writes me "That was fun. But you are still teaching 4/4."

@annbauerwriter Here is why: we eat a whole lot less. The portions are smaller: like a kid's meal. This is especially true for buffets: I won't go where I am charged full price as it is a waste of money for me.

Why, why, why are we discounting restaurant meals and coffee and groceries to people over 55, who hold most of the nation's wealth? Can I donate my discounts to someone who's 35 and raising a family, please?
Michelle Maxwell ™@MichelleMaxwell

Ok my fellow Senior Friends, who doesn’t like to save some money 💵 FYI EVERYONE!!! I heard a guy ask for his senior discount @ Wendy's, The girl at the register apologized and charged him less. When I asked the man what the discount was, he told me that seniors over age 55 ...get 10% off everything on the menu, every day. (But you need to ASK for your discount.) This incident prompted me to do some research, and I came across a list of restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, travel deals and other types of offers giving various discounts with different age requirements. I was actually surprised to see how many there are and how some of them start as young as 50. This list may not only be useful for you, but also friends and family, too. Dunkin Donuts gives FREE coffee to people over 55. If you're paying for a cup every day, you might want to start getting it FREE. YOU must ASK for your discount! If you assume sin(x) ≈ x, it suggests a lack of consideration for higher powers. Basically, you're an atheist.

@julianorobertrj @Math_files You just called it a "divergent series." Thank you. The sum of the integers is NOT -1/12 under any coherent definition of sum.

@ProfGoat @Math_files Why doesn't the analytic continuation of the zeta function not apply? Why do so many rigorous books on mathematics employ it to this divergent series (e.g., Bruce Berndt's "Ramanujan’s Notebooks" adds to Ramanujan's own proofs the analytic continuation of the zeta function).

At first glance, this sum clearly diverges—it grows without limit. But using advanced ideas from complex analysis and the Riemann zeta function, mathematicians can assign it a special value through a method called analytic continuation. This does not mean the ordinary sum is actually negative. Instead, it’s a deeper mathematical interpretation that appears in areas like string theory and quantum physics. It’s one of the most famous examples showing how mathematics can produce results that look impossible but turn out to be extremely useful.
