But for very low-income persons, lacking any documentation, fees of $10 to $50 to get birth certificates could be prohibitive and considered a de facto poll tax. My greatest objection, however, is the requirement of states to submit voter rolls to DHS for federal purging of names of suspected noncitizens. The potential for authoritarian abuse is too high, especially under this administration, but really for any administration. I'm surprised Democrats do not oppose this provision more vocally.

Reminder: if voting requires a $165 passport, that’s a poll tax. We made those unconstitutional in 1964.
