Unless you're an brain-wormed partisan, "Iran is an evil regime," "this preventive war was stupid and should never have been launched," and "this peace deal is a US humiliation" are three perfectly true things you should be able to believe at the same time.

@zelinarxy I talked about the inevitability of remigration in Europe (not that word ofc) in college in 2006. And was reading about US race issues from the late 90s. Nothing changed just more people woke up.

no hint of this in 2006 man. even 2010. we sleep walked into disaster and i don’t blame the zoomers for wanting to cull us for it. but it just hadn’t ramped up yet. it was unthinkable. no one thought they would do something like this. or that they could

i know zoomers think millennials are soft and naive and i know we say this shit constantly but the 12-front race war of all against all didn’t have to happen. it was basically mostly fine. even a little bit of restraint on the replacement drive and we could’ve thought about …

I am very much open to discussing the Pros/Cons of the MOU with Iran but the hyperbole and bad faith from the opponents make it virtually impossible

@ReviewsPossum One bogus stat doesn’t justify another bogus stat. The grooming gang scandal is huge and horrific as it is, but this back of the envelope calculation gives people who claim whole thing is a hoax a weapon, unforced error.

@hughhewitt Where do you get that ballistic missile production is set back by years or decades?

Hugh Hewitt@hughhewitt·
The trigger for “Epic Fury” and “Roaring Lion” was the post-“Midnight Hammer” lurch by the Iranian regime to mass production of ballistic missiles which would deter Israel (and by extension U.S.) from future missions to destroy nuclear weapons manufacturing processes at every level. The inventory of ballistic missiles and launchers was devastated by the 40 day war commencing 2/27. The ability to restart production is. if not completely gone, then severely damaged and set back by years or decades. The U.S. and its allies are far more secure from Iranian fanatics than they were on 2/27. The regime must survive the deep hatred of its own people and any future combat with U.S. alliance. The “correlation of forces” in Middle East has dramatically shifted in favor of the U.S. and its allies even as they now have to plan for the potential of Iran’s future efforts to close the Strait. The MOU is a punt and I expect another one in August. Any serious concessions to Iran would, I expect, trigger the resignation of senior Trump Administration officials and a split in the GOP. I don’t see that happening. It might, but the rush to assert “ defeat” or “victory” is doing little except to confirm priors among the Commentariat.
Bonchie@bonchieredstate

The existence of missiles and drones was Iran’s only leverage. Over the Strait and over the Gulf nations. Obviously, that leverage still exists at a dangerous level or we would have had no reason to sign this MOU. We could have just fully opened the Strait and declared victory. But we didn’t.

Look, my position is restart the fighting and crush the enemy. That said, I do not think the American people agree, nor are they willing to pay the price to do it, and if the Dems are seen as blocking "peace" just to mess with Trump it could backfire on them. Maybe.
Bonchie@bonchieredstate

I don't think any of them is worried about being responsible for the war continuing, nor do I think they believe Trump would restart the war anyway. No chance they approve it. Like less than zero if that were even possible.

@RedEaglePatriot Can't make a linear calc like that. Dems have a structural advantage, but it's driven by White libs, who only predominate in some districts. Further, incumbents outperform the generic ballot. Only a handful of GOP swing seats are open. The lack of retirements is telling imo

If the generic ballot is truly under D+5, that would probably be a 6-7 point shift to the left from 2024 adjusting for uncontested races. Given the fact a lot of that shift will be low propensity R dropoff from urban areas, the shift in contested races with R incumbents will most likely be ~3-4 points to the left, at most. Given this dynamic, the GOP should honestly expect to win the House in such an environment. They even have potential to gain seats. Also, if Tom Kean can prove he's alive, it gets a lot easier.
