Someone at the networks should really take note of the fact that there’s a massive online audience for these throwback clips of live bands playing on Reverb, Conan, Letterman, festival broadcasts, etc. Let’s put bands back on TV!!

@RustySutton Licensing shows that feature live music as the main component is extremely tricky compared to licensing other content. There are entire real shows that aren’t on streaming services just because they can’t license the music in the background.

@RustySutton Hell yes. Built to Spill on Reverb and My Morning Jacket on Conan are two performances I frequently watch.

@RustySutton I don’t think it would make the same cultural impact. People don’t watch TV like back then. Everyone has Netflix or MAX or Prime on at night now

@RustySutton agreed ! As a youngster unable to get into most of the venues where these bands would play i got to see many of these folks live for the first time via Reverb-esque programming 🙌🏻

@RustySutton Not to get too far afield, but also there’s a goldmine of older clips of musical acts on Shindig, Hullabaloo, and the musical variety shows like Smothers Brothers, Mike Douglas, Sonny & Cher, Tom Jones, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, etc. I saw Zappa on Steve Allen’s show.

@RustySutton Understandable conclusion but I don't think people are gonna tune in to tv shows just to watch bands, they're just gonna watch the clips online. Which is why Audiotree, TinyDesk & KEXP are so popular right now

@RustySutton YouTube is full of this stuff and it’s too bad that cool bands can no longer contribute to good ratings. I loved watching Reverb and Letterman had tons of great artists perform on his show.
