Africa bears some of the highest costs of a climate crisis it did not create. This year, the Africa Youth Climate Finance Fellowship (AYCFF), a flagship advocacy programme by Jacob’s Ladder Africa, responded by equipping young Africans to lead in an area that cuts across every green sector, climate finance. Over the course of nine months, 30 fellows from 18 different African countries participated in world-class training, developed grounded policy briefs, and engaged various stakeholders globally, amplifying youth perspectives across Africa’s climate finance discourse. AYCFF strengthened not only individual capacity but also a continent-wide community of practice prepared to influence systems, decisions, and investment flows. 🤝 As we build on this momentum, we are seeking strategic partners and funders to scale the Fellowship’s impact in future cohorts. 📩 Partner with us: info@jacobsladder.africa @JacobsLadder_A @TheAfricaCenter @TutuFellows @ClimateActAfric @giz_gmbh @ACAProgramme @Sellahb @Bilha_Ndirangu @James_I_Mwangi @ClimateWed @AfricanYouthFdn @TuzindukeYouthG @WorldBankKenya @KeTreasury @moneyacademyKE @macirearibot @r_razafiarivony @elbethel_alemaw @tenge_valentine @monica_mhina @A_Farole @HowardMwesigwa @inkoskaz @paschmaria_ @diolutobe @frankenfk

At the 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁, the Africa Youth Climate Finance Fellows (𝗔𝗬𝗖𝗙𝗙𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱) came together to share their experiences, their hopes, and their leadership in shaping a just transition for the continent. Their call is clear: African governments must ensure that at least 10% of climate finance is directed to young people, supporting green skills, innovation, and workforce development. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘁? Andrew Kumalo, an Africa Youth Climate Finance Fellow (AYCFF 2025), challenges leaders to move beyond rhetoric: "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱." His message is clear: with private sector involvement, backed and incentivized by strong government policies, Africa can unlock green jobs, drive innovation, and accelerate climate action. But only if youth are truly part of the process. This is why we created Voices of Africa, part of JLA’s ACS2 2025 strategy. By 2030, Africa is expected to create over 3 million green jobs in sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and e-mobility. But without the right policies, those jobs will go elsewhere. Industrial and trade rules, like requiring imported e-bikes to arrive disassembled so local workers can assemble them, can spark entire industries. In his article, Ahmed Osman – AYCFF Fellow 2025 and Youth & Climate Change Focal Point at Somalia’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change – spotlights the upcoming Africa Climate Summit (ACS-2), set for 8–10 September 2025 in Addis Ababa. He emphasizes Africa’s potential to lead global climate action, the urgency of mobilizing finance for green and resilient growth, and the critical role of youth, who make up over 60% of the continent’s population, in shaping solutions. Ahmed underscores that climate action is not just an environmental necessity, but also a pathway to economic transformation through green jobs that can tackle Africa’s youth unemployment crisis. 💬 Do you want to join the movement? 𝗙𝗶𝘅𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄: 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿 & 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 Let’s talk solutions. Tackling climate finance challenges means calling out inequities and inefficiencies in the system. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 & 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀 • Where’s the money going? Who’s benefiting? • Few public trackers exist, making it hard to monitor delivery and impact. 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 • The private sector contributes less than 15% of global climate finance, often avoiding high-risk adaptation projects in Africa. 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 • Too many programs are top-down. Local voices, especially youth and Indigenous groups, rarely have a seat at the table. That’s why the Africa Youth Climate Finance Fellows are working to translate complex finance flows into clear, compelling insights—so that climate commitments aren’t just headlines, but lifelines for communities on the frontlines. #AYCFF #ClimateFinance #AfricaClimateAction #JustTransition

𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 – 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗽𝘀? Even with billions pledged, the global climate finance system faces serious challenges, especially for Africa. Here’s where the cracks are showing: 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 • The Global South needs an estimated $2.4 trillion annually by 2030.  • But actual flows are less than $100B/year, far below the promised $100B by developed nations. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀   • Countries struggle to apply for and access funds due to complex procedures.   • Only a fraction of funding reaches local actors or youth-led initiatives. 𝗜𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝘀. 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻   • Over 70% of climate finance goes to mitigation (like energy), while adaptation (e.g., drought resilience) remains underfunded, yet Africa needs adaptation the most.   • Funding isn’t just about money. It’s about who gets it, when, and whether it makes a real difference. #AYCFF #ClimateFinance #AfricaClimateAction #JustTransition @JacobsLadder_A @TheAfricaCenter @TutuFellows @ClimateActAfric @giz_gmbh @ACAProgramme @Sellahb @Bilha_Ndirangu @James_I_Mwangi @ClimateWed @AfricanYouthFdn @TuzindukeYouthG @WorldBankKenya @KeTreasury @moneyacademyKE @macirearibot @r_razafiarivony @elbethel_alemaw @tenge_valentine @monica_mhina @A_Farole @HowardMwesigwa @inkoskaz @paschmaria_ @diolutobe @frankenfk
