The central focus of the just ended World Consumer Rights Day, which is celebrated on March 15 every year, was Child Online Protection. World Consumer Rights Day holds a special place on the @UCC_Official calendar as it offers an important opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to protecting and empowering consumers, while promoting fairness, accountability, and responsible business practices across the communications sector. On March 12, 2026, @UCC_Official marked the occasion with simultaneous regional events in Mbale, Gulu, Masindi, and Mbarara, bringing together local leaders, security agencies, parents, head teachers, and school children to discuss how best to address Child Online Protection. The events followed a series of school outreach and awareness campaigns conducted across the country. Today, children grow up in a highly connected world, where the internet supports learning, creativity, innovation, and social interaction. Thus, the digital space presents immense opportunities for their growth and development. However, alongside these opportunities come significant risks. Young people today face threats such as cyberbullying, online exploitation, exposure to harmful content, identity theft, privacy violations, and dangerous interactions with strangers. Excessive screen time has also been linked to challenges such as anxiety, sleep disruption, reduced physical activity, and social isolation. World Consumer Rights Day, therefore, provided an important platform to bring together industry players, parents, educators, school children, and policymakers to underscore a critical message: the online world is not automatically safe for children. Protecting children online requires shared responsibility, awareness, and collaboration. The conversations and engagements held across the country were therefore aimed not only at raising awareness but also at building a collective commitment to creating a safer digital environment for Uganda’s children.

Following the conclusion of the 2026 General Elections and a comprehensive security assessment, the Commission has directed the restoration of public internet access across Uganda, effective today, balancing national stability with citizens’ access to information, services, and economic activity. The temporary restriction was a proportionate measure to curb misinformation, electoral interference, and incitement during a sensitive period; essential services remained protected throughout. As connectivity resumes, users are reminded that access comes with responsibility. The internet must serve learning, business, and national cohesion, and not falsehoods or disorder. We thank the public for their patience, operators for compliance, and the media for responsible engagement.
